Fort Pierce, FL - The Vermont State University Lyndon baseball team couldn't get their bats going on Sunday afternoon. The result was an 11-1 loss to Susquehanna University at the College Baseball Spring Invitational. The River Hawks improved to 2-3 with the win, while the Hornets fell to 1-4.
Susquehanna took control early. Jack Cahill's two-run single in the bottom of the first inning staked the River Hawks to the early lead. Dylan Heyduk drove in another run with a two-out double in the bottom of the second inning.
Hornet starter Dale Ostermann (Harrington, DE) settled in and kept the River Hawks from doing further damage over the next four innings. However the Hornets couldn't get anything going against Susquehanna starter Jack Greco, mustering only a first inning single from Will Perkins (Holtwood, PA) over the first six innings.
Isaiah Wittrig (Phoenix, AZ) doubled leading off the Hornet seventh inning. Then Perkins drew a two-out walk, bringing the tying run to the plate and chasing Greco. However Dominic Giglio came on to get the final out and end the Lyndon threat. Susquehanna proceeded to break the game open with five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Lyndon plated an unearned run in the top of the eight, but the River Hawks answered with three more runs in the home eighth to account for the final score.
Cahill had two hits and four runs batted in to pace Susquehanna. Heyduk, Tony Rossi, and Michael Gagliardi all had two doubles, with Rossi and Gagliardi scoring three runs each and Heyduk scoring twice. Greco struck out 11 and walked four in picking up the win. Giglio struck out two in 1.1 innings of relief to pick up the save.
Evon Tembreull had an eighth inning base hit and came around to score Lyndon's only run. Ostermann struck out four, walked four and gave up six hits over six innings in absorbing the loss.
Lyndon wraps up its Florida trip on Monday morning when they square off against Waynesburg University at 10:00 am.
