North Myrtle Beach, SC - The Vermont State University Lyndon softball team took a 4-0 lead in their season opening game against the State University of New York at Delhi on Tuesday morning. Unfortunately for the Hornets, they were unable to hold off the Broncos, as Delhi rallied for a 7-6 win in eight innings. The Hornets also dropped a 16-4 exhibition decision to Grand Rapids Community College on Tuesday afternoon. The games were part of the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic.
Game 1 - SUNY Delhi 7, VTSU Lyndon 6
The Broncos pushed across an unearned run in the bottom of the sixth inning to tie the game. Then in the bottom of the eighth inning Delhi loaded the bases and Rylee Falcone delivered a base hit to left field, driving home Hannah Caughey with the winning run. Danielle Seymour was the hitting star for Delhi, delivering a triple and two singles and driving in three runs. Alethea Ferrara pitched six innings of two hit relief to get credit for the win.
Lyndon's Shyanne Glencross (Tilton, NH) had a big game in her collegiate debut. She reached base in all four plate appearances, with three hits and a walk. Ann Watkins (Los Angeles, CA) had a triple, a run bated in, and a run scored and Claudia Knapp (Howell, NJ) drove in a pair of runs. Bailey Quire (Gainesville, FL) took the loss in relief.
Game 2 - Grand Rapids CC 16, VTSU Lyndon 4 (exhibition)
The Hornets will reverse the order and play the same two teams on Wednesday. They will start the day with another exhibition agaisnt Grand Rapids at 11:00 am, then run it back against SUNY Delhi at 1:00 pm.
