Waterville, ME - Defending North Atlantic Conference men's tennis champion Thomas College bested Vermont State University Lyndon on Sunday afternoon, winning every set on the way to a 9-0 conference victory. The Terriers improved to 4-1 overall and 2-0 in conference play, while the Hornets remained winless in five outings, including two conference matches.
The Terriers took control of the match by sweeping all three doubles contests. Nick Mageira and Caleb Daigenault were 8-0 winners over Matthew McGeehan (Milford, CT) and Zahi Rashid (St. Johnsbury, VT) at third doubles and Seb Soto and Calvin Cutler bested Stephen Wutzl (Brookfield, CT) and James Salvas (Morrisville, VT), 8-2, at two. In the most competitive of the three matches, Gabe McPhail and Liam Gould took first doubles, 8-5, over Jeffrey Blais (Newport, VT) and David Gratton (Newport, VT).
The Terriers' Danny Kezerle and Kegan Rodrigue clinched the match by taking sixth and fifth singles without dropping a game. With the match decided, Thomas completed the sweep as Cutler downed Salvas, 6-1, 6-1, at four, Gould defeated Wutzl, 6-2, 6-1, at three, Soto defeated Gratton, 6-0, 6-3, at two, and McPhail defeated Blais, 6-1, 6-4 at one.
Lyndon will host Lesley University for a pair of NAC matches next Saturday afternoon at Topnotch Tennis Academy. The first match will begin at 4:00 pm, with the second match to follow immediately after.
