Hornet men's tennis takes two NAC matches from Lesley

Stowe, VT - Vermont State University Lyndon got strong play at the top of the lineup and swept a pair of North Atlantic Conference men's tennis matches from Lesley University by identical 6-3 scores on Saturday evening.  Lyndon improved to 2-5 on the season and evenev their conference record at 2-2.  Lesley fell to 0-5 overall and 0-3 in conference.

Match #1 - VTSU Lyndon 6, Lesley 3

Lyndon got off to a fast start with a pair of dominant wins in the top two doubles flights.  Hornet number one team Jeffrey Blais (Newport, VT) and David Gratton (Newport, VT) made quick work of the Lesley duo of Nick Rosen and James Ontiveros, 8-0.  At number two, Stephen Wutzl (Brookfield, CT) and James Salvas (Morrisville, VT) had their way with Bennett Locke and Miles Brajdic, 8-1.  Lesley crept closer when AC Esparragoza and DJ Cronin picked up a win at third doubles, 8-2, ove Matthew McGeehan (Milford, CT) and Quinn Bressler (Norton, MA).

The Hornets put away the match with three more dominant wins at the top of the singles lineup.  Wutzl started things with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Locke at number three.  Gratton was also 6-0, 6-0 winner, downing Ontiveros at number two.  A short time later Blais scored a 6-0, 6-1 win over rosen at first singles to clinch the match for Lyndon.

With things decided, Salvas closed out a 6-2, 6-1 win over Brajdic at fourth singles.  Lesley was able to salvage wins at five and six, with Esparragoza downing Bressler and Cronin getting the best of McGeehan.

Match #2 - VTSU Lyndon 6, Lesley 3

The nightcap unfolded in much the same fashion as the opener.  Blais and Gratton defeated Rosen and Ontiveros and Wutzl and Salvas defeated Locke and Brajdic, both by 8-0 margins,.  Blais again downed Rosen, 6-0, 6-0, at number one, and Wutlz beat Ontiveros, 6-0, 6-1 at number three.  Gratton then clinched the match with the performance of the night, a near perfect 6-0, 6-0 win over Locke at second singles.  Gratton notched a golden set in the first set by not losing a point.  He nearly duplicated the feat in the second set, losing only a single point.

With the match decided, Lesley was again able to garner a few wins at the bottom of the lineup.  Esparragoza and Cronin found Bressler and McGeehan a tougher matchup the second time around, but still prevailed, 8-6.  Salvas was Lyndon's final winner, beating Esparrogoza at four, but Brajdic and Cronin prevailed over Bressler and McGeehan respectively at five and six.

Lyndon will travel to the State University of New York at Delhi next Saturday for a NAC match with huge playoff implications.  Doubles play will begin at 11:00 am, with singles to follow.
