Hornet men's tennis loses a heartbreaker to SUNY Delhi

Delhi, NY - In a highly competitive matchup that saw four of six singles flights go to third set tiebreakers, it was the State University of New York at Delhi that emerged with a 5-4 North Atlantic Conference men's tennis victory over Vermont State University Lyndon.  The Broncos improved to 4-5 overall and 4-2 in NAC play, while the Hornets fell to 2-6 on the season and 2-3 in conference.

The Broncos took two of three doubles flights to open the match.  Lyndon's number one duo of Jeffrey Blais (Newport, VT) and David Gratton (Newport, VT) downed Delhi's Benjamin Anderson and Moises Saintil, 8-6.  However the Broncos took wins in second and third doubles.  Devin Guerrieri and Hannah Shafer were 8-6 winners over Stephen Wutzl (Brookfield, CT) and Gilbert Flores (Winstead, CT) at number two and JT Maccarrone and Jack Madera were 8-3 winners over Joseph Patrick Osborn (Norwich, VT) and Matthew McGeehan (Milford, CT) at number three.

Singles play turned out to be highly competitive almost throughout.  In the most dominant performance of the day, Gratton defeated Guerrieri, 6-2, 6-2, at two.  The only other straight set matchup came at six, where Madera was a 6-2, 7-5 winner over Osborn.

In the first flight match, Blais came from behind for a 6-7 (5-7), 6-1, 1-0 (10-7) win over Anderson.  Lyndon also picked up a win at four when Wutzl held off Maccarrone, 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (10-7).  However, the Broncos also picked up a pair of tiebreaker wins at three and five.  Saintil edged Flores, 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (11-9) at three and Shafer ralled for a 5-7, 6-1, 1-0 (10-5) win over James Salvas (Morrisville, VT) at five.

Lyndon will return home to host Vermont State University Castleton in a non-conference match on Monday.  That contest is currently scheduled to be played at Topnotch Tennis Academy and begin at 4:00 pm.
