Lyndonville, VT - The Vermont University Lyndon men's tennis team has been accustomed to New England spring weather forcing them to move their home matches indoors. In fact, the Hornets have not played a home match on campus at the Dudley Bell Tennis Center since the final match of the 2017 season. That changed on Monday, as sunny skies and brisk air provided the backdrop as the Hornets hosted Vermont State University Castleton in a non-conference match. Unfortunately for Lyndon, Castleton was able to emerge with an 8-1 victory and improve their record to 6-5 on the season. Lyndon fell to 2-7.
The first doubles matchup between Lyndon's Jeffrey Blais (Newport, VT) and Stephen Wutzl (Brookfield, CT) and Castleton's Miki Almirall and Connor Davis was competitive, with the Castleton duo prevailing, 8-0. Castleton captured the other two doubles flights without dropping a game.
David Gratton (Newport, VT) was Lyndon's lone winner, as he cruised to a 6-2, 6-3 win over Almirall at number two. In the first flight, Blais lost a hard fought match matchup to Khiem Nguyen, 6-4, 6-4. The Spartans swept through the other four flights.
Lyndon gets back into North Atlantic Conference play on Tuesday when they travel to Vermont State University Johnson for a pair of matches. The first match will begin with doubles play at 2:00 pm, with the second match to follow as soon as flights are open.
