Johnson, VT - The Vermont State University Lyndon men's tennis team swept a pair of North Atlantic Conference matches from Vermont State University Johnson on Tuesday afternoon. With the wins, the Hornets improved to 4-7 overall and 4-3 in NAC play. Johnson remained winless in nine matches, including five conference tilts.
Match 1 - VTSU Lyndon 8, VTSU Johnson 1
The Hornets picked up wins in all three doubles flights and five of six singles matches. Jeffrey Blais (Newport, VT) and David Gratton (Newport, VT) disposed of Johnson's Maggie Egan and Adiance Cheromiah at number one doubles. Stephen Wutzl and Gilbert Flores prevailed over Matea Smith and Riley Fitzgerald at number two, and Matthew McGeehan (Milford, CT) and Joseph Patrick Osborn (Norwich, VT) defeated Mohammed Semega and Faith Mead at number three.
In singles play, Blais and Gratton breezed to wins in the top two flights, defeating Egan and Smith respectively. Fitzgerald picked up Johnson's only win when he got past Wutzl at number three. James Salvas (Morrisville, VT), Osborn, and Flores came away with wins in the other three flights.
Match 2 - VTSU Lyndon 6, VTSU Johnson 3
Blais and Gratton dominated the nightcap. The duo posted an 8-0 victory over Egan and Smith at first doubles, then downed the Johnson pair in the top two singles flights, all without losing a single game. McGeehan and Osborn picked up another win at third doubles, but Wutzl and Flores fell to Fitzgerald and Cheromiah at two.
Salvas and Flores both had to go to a third set tie break to emerge victorious in their matches. Salvas got past Mead, 10-4 in the tiebreak at number four, while Flores edged Cheromiah, 11-9, in the fifth singles matchup. The Badgers were able to pickup straight set wins at three and six.
Lyndon will wrap up the season on Saturday afternoon when they host Thomas College in a North Atlantic Conference match. Depending on weather, that match will either be played at 1:00 pm on campus at the Dudley Bell Tennis Center, or at 4:00 pm in Stowe at Topnotch Tennis Academy. Saturday will also be Senior Day, as the men's tennis seniors will be recognized before the start of play.
