Presque Isle, ME - Vermont State University Lyndon battered University of Maine at Presque Isle pitching to the tune of 21 runs and 26 hits in sweeping Sunday's North Atlantic Conference baseball doubleheader. The Hornets improved to 6-25 overall and 5-8 in NAC play, while the Owls fell to 3-21 on the season and 2-12 in conference.
Game 1 - VTSU Lyndon 15, UMaine-Presque Isle 4
TJ Santaw (Newport, VT) got the Hornets off and running with a lead off home run over the left field fence. Evan Duncan (Little Elm, TX) later singled, stole second, and scored on Matt Gonyeau's (St. Albans, VT) two-out base hit, giving Lyndon a 2-0 lead.
UMPI got one run back in the bottom of the first inning. Joey Lippo was hit by a pitch leading off nd later scored on a Romeo Harris base hit.
Lyndon struck again in the top of the third inning. Santaw and Kearson Grisham (Choctaw, MS) started things with back to back base hits. After a double steal, Matt Doherty (Gardner, MA) lofted a three-run home run, Hornets. That home run was Doherty's ninth of his career, moving him into the top spot on Lyndon's career home run list of the modern NCAA Division III era, which began in 2008-09.
The Hornets weren't done in the third. Gonyeau walked following Doherty's homer. Back to back base hits from Ryan Alt (Poultney, VT) and Alberto Bustamante (Northridge, CA) loaded the bases. Dale Ostermann (Harrington, DE) then laced a two-run double, driving in Gonyeau and Alt. Bustamante then scored when Nolan Barber (Jericho, VT) grounded out, making it 8-1, Lyndon, after three innings.
The Owls cut into the Hornet lead in their half of the third inning. After Lippo walked leading off, singles from Garrett Chadwick and Joey Blke loaded the bases. Anthony Searels' two-run base hit drove in Lippo and Chadwick to cut the Hornet advantage to 8-3.
The Hornets continued to pour it on in the fourth inning. Duncan started things with a one-out triple. Doherty then walked. Gonyeau singled down the left field line, driving in Duncan, then Alt delivered a double to center field, driving in Doherty. After Gonyeau scored on a wild pitch, Ostermann drove in Alt to extend the Hornet lead to 12-3.
Lyndon plated three more runs in the top of the fifth inning. Santaw singled leading off and one out later Duncan homered over the center field fence. Doherty was up next. He belted his second home run of the game.
UMPI was able to plate one run in the bottom of the seventh inning, but it wasn't nearly enough.
Jack Holley (SanGabriel, CA) started for Lyndon and picked up the win. He went five innings, allowing three runs and six hits. UMPI starter Spencer Harmon took the loss.

Lyndon again started fast in the nightcap. Santaw reached on a passed ball following a strikeout, then Duncan hit his third home run in as many games to put the Hornets in front, 2-0.
Santaw led off the top of the third inning with a double, He scored on Gonyeau's two-out base hit to extend the Hornet lead.
The Hornets tacked on two more runs in the top of the fifth inning. Grisham walked, then Duncan was hit by a pitch and Alt drew another walk to load the bases. Bustamante's base hit drove in Grisham and Duncan to make it 5-0, Lyndon.
UMPI finally got on the board in the home half of the fifth inning. Harris was hit by a pitch leading off. Payton Jones was up next and doubled, but the Hornets gunned down Harris trying to score. However Jones was able to come around to score thanks to a pair of wild pitches.
The Owls crept closer in the bottom of the sixth inning. Lippo was again the catalyst, drawing a leadoff walk. After Chadwick was hit by a pitch, both runners moved up on a wild pitch. Tommy Burns' sacrifice fly scored Lippo and Chadwick came home on Jones' base hit, cutting the Hornet lead to 5-3 heading into the final inning.
Gonyeau led off the Lynodn seventh with a base hit and later came hone with an insurance run on Ostermann's RBI base hit.
Brandon Fernandez (Sebring, FL) came on for Lyndon starter Mike Redmond to pitch the bottom of the seventh inning. He was able to survive a pair of walks and retire the Owls to secure the win and pick up a save.
Redmond earned the win after allowing three runs and two hits over six innings. He struck out three and walked three. Jones went the distance and too the loss for UMPI.
Lyndon will play at Thomas College on Monday afternoon at 4:00 pm. That contest is one that was rescheduled from April 7th.
