Hornets can't recover from early deficit versus Norwich

Lyndonville, VT - Norwich University scored five runs in the top of the first inning of Wednesday's non-conference baseball game with Vermont State University Lyndon.  The Hornets never recovered, as the Cadets came away with a 9-3 victory to improve to 7-20 on the season.  Lyndon fell to 2-18.

Norwich did all of their damage in the first inning after there were two outs.  Geffen Franus got things started with a base hit back up the middle.  He then proceeded to steal second and third.  After Brock Carpenter walked, Trevor Lussier delivered an RBI single to put Norwich in front.  After a double steal, Carpenter came home on a wild pitch.  Next, Jakob Hayes walked, then Joe Grygent's double brought home both Lussier and Hayes.  Jon Ringer's base hit drove in Grygent, making it 5-0, Norwich.

The Cadets added another run in the second inning.  Franus was again the catalyst with a one-out double.  After stealing third, he came in to score on Carpenter's sacrifice fly.

Lyndon's offense came to life in the home half of the fifth inning.  The first two batters, Anthony Ness (Silver Springs, NV) and Alberto Bustamante (Northridge, CA) were hit by pitches.  Dale Ostermann (Harrington, DE) then beat out a bunt to load the bases.  Isaiah Wittrig (Phoenix, AZ) grounded into a fielder's choice, allowing Ness and Bustamante to score the first two Lyndon runs.  Ostermann scored on Kearson Grisham's (Choctaw, MS) sacrifice fly, cutting the Norwich advantage to 6-3.

Norwich got one of the runs back in the top of the sixth inning when Tyler O'Neill was hit by a pitch and later scored on Owen Silk's double.  The Cadets tacked on two more insurance runs in the top of the ninth to account for the final score.

Seven Norwich pitchers limited Lyndon to only four hits on the day, while striking out nine Hornet batters without issuing a walk.  Carson Rath, the second Cadet pitcher, was credited with the win.

Lyndon also went through seven pitchers.  Starter Dylan Crump (Falls Village, CT) was tagged with the loss.

Lyndon returns to action this weekend with a four-game North Atlantic Conference series at the University of Maine at Farmington.  Both double headers have been moved due to poor field conditions in Farmington.  Saturday's twin bill will be played at Husson University and will start at 3:00 pm.  Sundays pair will be played at Thomas college, with first pitch at noon.
