Hornet softball splits NAC doubleheader with UMaine-Presque Isle

Lyndonville, VT - The Vermont State University Lyndon softball team got their bats working, pounding out 12 hits en route to an 11-3 North Atlantic Conference victory over the University of Maine at Presque Isle on Monday afternoon.  UMPI rebounded to edge the Hornets, 3-2, in the nightcap.  Lyndon moved to 5-10 on the season and 1-1 in the NAC, while UMPI stands at 3-13 overall and 3-1 in conference.

Game 1 - VTSU Lyndon 11, UMaine-Presque Isle 3

Ann Watkins (Los Angeles, CA) wasted little time getting Lyndon going, leading off the game with a double to center field.  She moved to third on a wild pitch, then scored on Blake Southworth's (Bethel, VT) sacrifice fly.

UMPI took the lead in the top of the third inning.  With two outs, Hailey Saylor reached on an error.  Gracelyn Walsh followed with a two-run home run over the center field fence, giving the Owls a 2-1 advantage.

Lyndon promptly answered in the home half of the third.  Lindsey Gannon (Beverly, MA) walked leading off.  After Kerigan Disorda (Benson, VT) bunted Gannon to second, Watkins followed with a base hit.  Southworth then reached on an error, scoring Gannon to tie things.  After Claudia Knapp (Howell, NJ) beat out an infield hit to load the bases, Saleena Porter (St. Johnsbury, VT) delivered a two-run single, scoring Watkins and Southworth.  Porter later scored on Sierra Anderson's (Somersworth, NH) hit, giving the Hornets a 5-2 lead.

The Owls crept closer in the top of the fourth inning when Zoe Stewart walked leading off and later came around to score on Emma McNally's ground out.

The Hornets got that run back in the bottom of the fourth inning.  With two outs, Southworth doubled.  She moved to third, then scored on a pair of wild pitches.

Lyndon put the game away in the bottom of the sixth inning.  Watkins was hit by a pitch leading off.  Southworth then walked and was lifted for pinch runner Emily Anderson (Levittown, NY).  After both runners moved up on a wild pitch, Knapp singled to left, driving in both.  Porter followed with an RBI double.  Victoria Valentine (East Burke, VT) then singled and stole second.  Riann Fortin (Newport, VT) reached on an error, allowing both Porter and Valentine to score and giving the Hornets the walk off win.

Valentine earned the win, allowing only one earned run and five hits over six innings of work.  She struck out five and walked two.  Walsh started for UMPI and took the loss while allowing five earned runs and 11 hits.

Game 2 - UMaine-Presque Isle 3, VTSU Lyndon 2

The nightcap developed into a pitcher's duel between Lyndon's Bailey Quire (Gainesville, FL) and UMPI's Saylor.  UMPI got on the board with an unearned run in the top of the first inning when Kristen Harding reached on an error leading off and later scored on Saylor's sacrifice fly.  The Hornets answered with an unearned run of their own in the bottom of the frame when Watkins singled leading off, moved to second on a passed ball, and scored on Porter's RBI single.

That was all of the scoring in the first five innings, as Quire and Saylor both put up zeros for the next four frames.  The Hornets had the best opportunity to score during that stretch.  They loaded the bases in the bottom of the third, but were unable to push across a run.

UMPI was able to break the tie in the top of the sixth inning.  Saylor singled leading off, then Walsh reached on a two-base error.  When Stewart grounded into a fielder's choice, Saylor beat the throw to the plate, giving the Owls the lead.  Zoe Alyward-Frank then delivered a base hit to left field, scoring Walsh to make it 3-1, UMPI.

Lyndon got back within one in the bottom of the sixth inning.  Knapp walked leading off, then Valentine beat out an infield hit.  Fortin grounded into a fielder's choice, retiring Knapp.  However a bad throw on the play allowed Valentine to score to cut the UMPI lead to 3-2.

After Qure retired the Owls in order in the top of the seventh, Lyndon had one last opportunity to tie the game.  Gannon led off with a base hit, then Disorda's sacrifice bunt moved her to second base.  However, Saylor was able to retire the next two hitters, as the Owls hung on for the win.

Saylor allowed seven hits, struck out two, and walked two to garner the win.  Quire also allowed seven hits, striking out three without walking a batter, and suffered the hard luck loss.  Neither pitcher allowed an earned run in the game.

Lyndon travels to Husson University for another NAC doubleheader on Tuesday.  First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 pm.
