Castleton, VT - Vermont State University Castleton ran out to an 11-0 lead at halftime and cruised to an 18-1 non-conference women's lacrosse victory over Vermont State University Lyndon. The Spartans improved to 2-9 with the win, while the Hornets remained winless in six games.
Kimberly McCarthy paced Castleton with three goals and three assists. Gianna Geraci also recorded a hat trick, while five different Spartans found the back of the cage twice. McCarthy also recorded eight ground balls and four draw controls. Megan Ward chipped in with seven ground balls, four caused turnovers, and four draw controls.
Riley Webster (Upton, MA) scored the only Lyndon goal with 2:18 to go in the third period. Webster had three of Lyndon's five shots. Victoria Fitih (Madison, TN) and Isabel Bourgeois (St. Johnsbury, VT) were the only other Hornets to get off a shot. Kiara Mack (Winooski, VT) led Lyndon with eight ground balls and three draw controls while Fitih and Bourgeois each caused three turnovers.
Liv Cormier went the distance in goal for Castleton, making three saves on the way to earning the win. Alyssa Gerrish (Washington, VT) made six saves in absorbing the loss.
Castleton outshot Lyndon, 39-5, and held a 52-26 advantage in ground balls. The Spartans turned the ball over 34 times to 46 for the Hornets. The Hornets struggled to get the ball out of their own end, only successfully completing eight of 36 clear attempts, while Castleton completed 11 of 16.
Lyndon is scheduled to host Husson University in a North Atlantic Conference contest Saturday at noon.
