Rutland, VT - The Vermont State University men's tennis team opened the 2024 season with a non-conference match against Vermont State University Castleton on Sunday afternoon.  The Spartans got the best of the Hornets, taking an 8-1 victory in a match played at the Vermont Sport and Fitness Club.  Castleton moved to 2-0 on the season.

The Spartans took a 2-1 lead during doubles play.  After Castleton cruised to wins in third and second doubles, the Lyndon duo of Jeffrey Blais (Newport, VT) and David Gratton (Newport, VT) picked up a hard fought 8-5 win over Castleton's Miki Almirall and Connor Davis.

Castleton swept the six singles flights to put the match away.  Castleton's Khiem Nguyen was a 6-0, 6-2 winner over Blais in first singles.  The second flight match between Gratton and Almirall was shaping up as the best match of the day.  It came to a premature end, however, when with Almirall leading 7-5, 5-5, Gratton was forced to retire.  The Spartans swept the other four flights without dropping more than one game.

Lyndon is off until March 26th, when they travel to Norwich University for another non-conference contest.
