Paxton, MA - The Vermont State University Lyndon women's lacrosse team took to the field for their first game of the season on Tuesday evening. Unfortunately for the Hornets, they couldn't generate any offense and dropped a 13-0 decision at Anna Maria College. It was Anna Maria's first win in three games this season.
The Amcats took control right from the onset, jumping out to a 4-0 lead after one quarter and an 8-0 advantage at halftime. Anna Maria scored two quick goals to open the second half, then cruised to the shutout win. Christine Ijawet led the Amcats with three goals. Ivy Ballou, Riley Michaud, and Raegan Hachey scored two goals apiece,.
Abigail Stacy (East Barre, VT) had Lyndon's only shot on goal. Thea Cooper (Barton, VT) and Riley Webster (Upton, MA) had the only other Hornet shots. Victoria Fitih (Madison, TN) led Lyndon with a pair of ground balls and four caused turnovers.
Sarah Burt and Gabi Gibson each played a half in goal for Anna Maria, with Burt earning the win. Alyssa Gerrish (Washington, VT) and Bridget Denio (Waterford, VT) each played a half in the Lyndon goal, with Gerrish stopping eight of the 16 shots she faced and taking the loss and Denio turning away seven of the 12 shots that she faced.
Anna Maria outshot Lyndon, 35-3, and dominated ground balls, 29-5. The Hornets turned the ball over 41 times to 27 for the Amcats.
Lyndon will go on the road to Maine Maritime Academy for a non-conference contest this Saturday at 4:00 pm.
