Lyndonville, VT - The Vermont State University Lyndon women's basketball team used a 16-1 run at the start of the second half to break open a close game and cruise to a 72-58 non-conference victory over Paul Smith's College on Wednesday evening. Lyndon won for the fourth time in a row and the fifth time in six games and improved to 9-13 on the season. Paul Smith's fell to 8-11.
The Hornets came out on fire scoring 28 points in the opening quarter to take a 28-17 lead, The pace slowed in the second stanza, as the Bobcats chipped away to pull within two at 31-29 following a Holly Bagley three-pointer with 1:44 to go in the half. Saleena Porter (St. Johnsbury, VT) answered with a three of her own to send Lyndon into halftime with a five-point lead.
Kerigan Disorda (Benson, VT) scored the first basket of the second half. Lyndon then broke the game open with a three-point barrage, connecting from long range on four straight possessions, with three coming from Sage Smith (Colebrook, NH) and one coming from Kadienne Whitcomb (West Burke, VT). The Hornets cruised home from there.
Smith led Lyndon with 23 points, connecting on seven of ten shots from behind the three-point arc. She added six assists and six rebounds. Porter also had a big night, finishing with 19 points on 7/11 shooting and grabbing nine boards. Whitcomb also reached double figures with 12 points and Disorda dished out seven assists.
Bagley paced Paul Smith's with 19 points and eight rebounds. Jordan Louis, Finnley Jacobson, and Jillian York also hit double figures for the Bobcats, finishing with 12, 11, and 10 points respectively.
Lyndon recognized graduate student Porter, senior players Disorda, Hannah Gordon (Concord, VT), and Chloe McIntire (Bradford, VT) and senior manager Amber Everett prior to tonight's game. The seniors were joined on the court by family members and friends, as the Lyndon community thanked them for their contributions to the program and to Hornet athletics.
Lyndon goes on the road for two pivotal North Atlantic Conference games this weekend. The Hornets will paly at the University of Maine at Presque Isle on Friday evening at 7:30 pm, and again on Saturday afternoon at 3:00 pm.
