Presque Isle, ME - Thr University of Maine at Presque Isle erupted for 62 second half points and pulled away from Vermont State University Lyndon for a 95-64 North Atlantic Conference men's basketball victory on Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Owls concluded their regular season at 11-13 and evened ther NAC record at 7-7. Lyndon dropped to 3-21 on the season and concluded NAC play at 3-11.
The first half was a defensive struggle, as both teams had a hard time finding the mark. After Tyrese Harris (Fort Benning, GA) scored the first four Hornet points to put Lyndon ahead, 4-2, UMIP ran of 15 straight points, capped by a three-pointer and a layup from Gilbert Jean Mendez. Lyndon responded with an 11-0 run of their own, and Mondwell Bukle's (Fayetteville, NC) three-pointer brought the Hornets within two points at 17-15 with eight minutes to go in the half. UMPI would maintain the single digit lead for the rest of the half, however, and a Myles Jones jumper sent the Owls into intermission with a 33-27 lead.
After Akhe McMichael scored to open the second half, an Isaac McCann (Phoenix, AZ) three-pointer brought the Hornets within five points. That would be as close as Lyndon would get, as a 10-0 Owl run a short time later would push the lead to 16. UMPI would cruise to the finish line from there.
Jean Mendez would lead UMPI with 19 points and four assists. Jones added 13 points and four assists and McMichael also reached double figures with 12 points. Doug McCalla had a near double double with eight points and ten rebounds.
Bukle paced Lyndon with 13 points. Matt Doyle (Whitesboro, NY) and Gregory Gonyea Jr. (Dolgeville, NY) also hit double figures with 11 and ten points respectively, Doyle grabbed a team best six rebounds.
Lyndon will close out the season with a non-conference game at Vermont State University Johnson on Tuesday. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30.
