Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Hornet men's basketball overwhelmed in exhibition at D1 Dartmouth

Hanover, NH - NCAA Division I Dartmouth College proved to be too big, too athletic, and too talented for Vermont State University Lyndon on Monday evening.  The Big Green cruised to a 129-47 victory over the Hornets in a game that was classified as an exhibition for Lyndon, but Dartmouth's season opener.

After Dartmouth's Cade Haskins opened the game with a three-pointer and Gregory Gonyea Jr. (Dolgeville, NY) answered with a layup, the Big Green went on a 20-0 run over the next five plus minutes.  Lyndon responded with their best stretch of the game, playing Dartmouth even over the next five minutes.  However Dartmouth held Lyndon scoreless over the final 8:49 of the first half, going on a 24-0 run to break the game completely open.  Dartmouth continued to pull away after intermission, coasting to the victory.

Haskins was 11/16 from the field, including 8/12 from behind the three-point arc to lead Dartmouth with 32 points in only 18 minutes.  Ben Brown added 17 points and Connor Amundsen and Cameron McNamee chipped in 12 points apiece.

Gonyea paced Lyndon with 13 points on 6/10 shooting.  Deshawn Ford (Fort Walton Beach, FL) was the only other Hornet in double figures, finishing with 12 points.

Dartmouth shot 49/78 (62.8%) from the field, including a red hot 20/41 (48.8%) from behind the three-point arc.  Meanwhile Lyndon was only 17/53 (32.1%) from the field and 5/19 (26.3%) from the three-point line.  Dartmouth held a commanding 51-23 rebounding advantage and forced 20 Lyndon turnovers while only committing seven themselves.

Lyndon will open the regular season this weekend at the annual Vermont State University Tip-Off Classic, hosted this season by Vermont State University Randolph.  The Hornets will play the hosts at 3:30 pm on Saturday.  Vermont State University Johnson will face Framingham State University in the second opening round game.  Saturday's winners will play in the Classic championship game Sunday afternoon at 3:00 pm.  the two losing teams will play in a 1:00 consolation game.
