Lyndonville, VT- The Vermont State University Lyndon women's basketball team advanced to the Vermont State University Tip Off Classic championship game while also getting their first win of the season against Vermont State University Randolph by a score of 77-58 on Saturday afternoon. The Hornets evened their record at 1-1, while VTSU Randolph fell to 2-2 on the season.
The Hornets had a slow start, but then came back to take the lead and never looked back. Sophomore guard Ella Huntington (Taylorsville, UT) made her second appearance as a Hornet and didn't disappoint. She was the highest scorer for the team with 20 points while also playing great defense having multiple steals. She was followed by senior guard Sage Smith (Colebrook, NH) with 15 points. Niyjah Wright (Washington, DC) also had a great game scoring 12 points off the bench. The team all around played good defense making the Knights take tough shots and forced them into 17 turnovers.
The two leading scorers for the Knights were freshman Yvonne Roberge with 25 points and Marielle Benoit with 19 points.
The Hornets will face the New England College Pilgrims Sunday at 2:00 pm in the Classic championship game. NEC defeated Vermont State University Johnson, 66-34, in Saturday's other first round game. The consolation game between VTSU Randolph and VTSU Johnson will be Sunday at 12:00 p.m.
