Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Hornet men's soccer downed by Plymouth State in season finale

Lyndonville, VT - The Vermont State University Lyndon men's soccer team brought the curtain down on its 2024 season on Saturday afternoon, hosting Plymouth State University in a non-conference affair.  Unfortunately for the Hornets, the visiting Panthers scored three early goals and went on to post a 6-1 victory.  Plymouth improved to 6-8-2 on the season, while Lyndon finished at 1-12-1.

The Panthers found the back of the net less than one minute into the game when Faisal Abdallah took a pass from August Westerholm and fired a shot past Lyndon goalkeeper D'Amecio Singleton (Savannah, GA).  Plymouth made it 2-0 less than two minutes later when Walter Driscoll scored off of an assist from David Nilsson.  Then in the 12th minute, Abdallah returned the favor and found Westerholm, who made a run and found the net to give Plymouth a 3-0 lead.  After that the Lyndon defense stiffened, and Plymouth was content to play the possession game.  As a result, neither team scored in the final 32 minutes of the half.

It was more of the same in the early going of the second half, with neither team able to score.  Then Plymouth's Colby Cowan broke free and scored in the 62nd minute to make it 4-0, Panthers.  About a minute later, Lucas McCarthy fired a shot off of Singleton and into the net to make it 5-0.

Lyndon finally got on the board in the 70th minute.  Gilbert Flores (Winstead, CT) took advantage of a Plymouth giveaway in their own end and blasted a left footed shot past Panther keeper Scott Danroth and into the upper left corner of the net.  Plymouth's Nils Skogestig completed the scoring in the 78th monute when he took a pass from Hunter Holland and scored.

Danroth made two saves in goal for Plymouth en route to earning the win.  Singleton turned away four Panther shots in the Lyndon goal.  Plymouth outshot Lyndon, 24-3.

Lyndon graduates Flores, and defenders Matthew McGeehan (Milford, CT) and Guillermo Joaquin Ortiz Garcia (Enosburg Falls, VT), along with seniors Jacob Baesemann (Waterford, VT) and James Salvas (Morrisville, VT), who were both unable to suit up this season.  The Hornets have 14 underclassmen, most of whom are expected back to form the nucleus of the 2025.
