Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Hornet women lock up Fisher in the second half to earn non-conference victory

Lyndonville, VT - Vermont State University Lyndon held visiting Fisher College to 13 second half points en route to a 63-42 non-conference women's basketball victory on Tuesday evening.  Lyndon improved to 5-12 with the win, while Fisher fell to 1-19.

After the two teams battled on nearly even terms in the first quarter, Fisher used an 18-5 run to take a 25-13 lead with just under six minutes to go in the second quarter.  Lyndon responded with back to back three-pointers from Riley Webster (Upton, MA).  After Fisher's Ariana Ramos-Cardona connected on a short jumper, Webster drained a third consecutive three to pull the Hornets to within five at 27-22.  Sage Smith (Colebrook, NH) then scored nine straight points, capped by a three-pointer at the buzzer, to send Lyndon into halftime with a 31-29 lead.

The Hornets seized control of the game in the opening minutes of the third quarter.  Lyndon held Fisher scoreless for six and a half minutes while scoring 14 points themselves over that stretch.  Saleena Porter's (St. Johnsbury, VT) three-pointer gave the Hornets a 15-point lead, 44-29, with 3:34 to go in the quarter.  Fisher was never able to cut the Lyndon lead to single digits the rest of the way, as the Hornet defense limited Fisher to 20.0% shooting and 13 second half points.

Smith paced the Hornets with 19 points and eight rebounds.  Riann Fortin (Newport, VT) added 14 points and Kadienne Whitcomb (West Burke, VT) chipped in with 12 points.  Porter had a huge game on the glass with 16 rebounds and recorded a game high eight assists.  Ramos-Cardona was the only Fisher player in double figures, scoring 18 points.  Olivia Hamel scored eight points and pulled down ten rebounds.

Lyndon gets back into North Atlantic Conference play this weekend when the Hornets host the University of Maine at Farmington for a pair of games.  The Hornets and Beavers will tip off at 7:30 pm on Friday and 3:00 pm on Saturday.
