Lyndonville, VT - The Vermont State University Lyndon men's basketball team connected on 20 three-point goals en route to a 102-80 North Atlantic Conference victory over Maine Maritime Academy on Friday evening. The win was Lyndon's first of the season.. The Hornets are now 1-16 overall and 1-6 in NAC play, Maine Maritime falls to 5-9 on the season and 1-5 in conference.
Maine Maritime jumped out to a quick 8-0 lead on a three-pointer and a jumper from CJ Lilljeqvist sandwiched around a Carter Rubin three. Lyndon battled back to tie things at 15-15 on a Peyton Olsen (Middleburgh, NY) three. The two teams then battled back and forth in a first half that saw nine lead changes. With the Mariners holding a 38-37 advantage with just over three minutes remaining in the opening half, Lyndon went on a 11-4 run capped by a Matt Doyle (Whitesboro, NY) basket to take a 48-42 lead into halftime.
Tavarius Vance (Barre, VT) knocked down a pull-up jumper on Lyndon's first possession of the second half and Isaac McCann (Phoenix, AZ) followed with a three-pointer to push the Hornet lead to double figures. A three from Markus Ramirez and a Josiah Dancy layup cut the lead back to six, but threes from McCann and Olsen pushed the Hornet lead to 12 and Maine Maritime never got back to single digits the rest of the game.
Mondwell Bukle (Fayetteville, NC) paced the Hornets with 19 points on 7/11 shooting, including 5/9 from behind the three-point arc. Gregory Gonyea Jr. (Dolgeville, NY) finished with 17 points. Vance tallied 14 points and nine rebounds, while Olsen posted a near triple double with 13 points, nine rebounds, and nine assists.
Ramirez led Maine Maritime with 12 points. Isaiah Oquendo and Jack Banks were the only other Mariners in double figures, each finishing with 11 points.
Lyndon connected on 37 of 70 shots (52.9%), including 20 of 36 (55.6%) from behind the three-point arc. Maine Maritime was 29/78 (37.2%) from the floor, and only 6/29 from long range. The Hornets held a 39-29 rebounding advantage and committed 11 turnovers to eight for the Mariners.
The same two teams will play again on Saturday afternoon in Stannard Gymnasium. Tip-Off is scheduled for 1:00 pm.
