Lyndonville, VT - Vermont State University Johnson bested Vermont State University Lyndon, 7-2, in Wednesday's North Atlantic Conference women's tennis match. The Badgers improved to 2-4 on the season and 1-2 in NAC play, while the Hornets remained winless in seven matches, including three conference outings.
The Badgers jumped in front by sweeping the three doubles flights. Matea Smith and Maggie Egan cruised to an 8-1 victory over Renee Chaples (Three Rivers, MA) and Emily Sklodosky (Andover, CT) at number one. The other two flights were more tightly contested. Johnson's Faith Mead and Gabby Wardwell defeated Maachah Krull (Woodsville, NH) and Christina McKivergan (Essex, VT) in second doubles. Kaitlyn Stone and Amelia Eagan outlasted Sage Smith (Colebrook, NH) and Chloe McIntire (Bradford, VT), 8-6, in the third flight.
The Badgers clinched the match with wind in first and third singles. Smith was a 6-2, 6-0 winner over Chaples at one, and Mead defeated Sklodosky, 6-2, 6-0, at three. Wardwell kept the Badger momentum going with a 6-1, 6-4 win over McKivergan at four, and McIntire dropped a close 6-6, 6-6 decision to Hattie Ebling at six.
Krull got Lyndon in the win column by rallying for a three-set victory, 2-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-6) over Egan in second singles. Smith got Lyndon's other win with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Sam Russell-Davis at five.
Prior to today's match the Hornets honored seniors Chaples, Sklodosky, and McIntire. They were recognized for their contributions to the Hornet tennis program an presentd with gifts of appreciation.
The Hornets will return to action Saturday at noon when they host Husson University in another NAC contest.
