Hornet women's tennis comes up short at VTSU Johnson

Johnson, VT - In a battle of two Vermont State University women's tennis programs on Saturday, it was Vermont State Johnson that came away with a hard fought 6-3 victory over Vermont State Lyndon.    The win was the Badgers' first in five matches, while the Hornets remain winless in five matches.

Johnson jumped in front by taking two of three doubles contests.  Matea Smith and Maggie Egan were 8-3 winners over Lyndon's Renee Chaples (Three Rivers, MA) and Maachah Krull (Woodsville, NH) at first doubles.  Johnson's Gabby Wardwell and Kaitly Stone picked up an 8-1 win over Christina McKivergan (Essex, VT) and Chloe McIntire (Bradford, VT) at second doubles.  The Hornets got on the board when Emily Sklodosky (Andover, CT) and Victoria Fitih (Madison, TN) defeated Amelia Eagan and Hattie Ebling, 8-4, at third doubles.

The Badgfers clinched the win by taking four of six singles flights.  Smith was a 6-0, 6-0 winner over Chaples in first singles.  Stone downed Sklodosky, 6-4, 6-2, at number three.  Ebling won a tight first set, then cruised to a 7-5, 6-1 win over Fitih in the fifth flight match.  Ebling picked up Johnson's final win with a 6-0, 6-1 win over McIntire at sixth singles.

Two Hornets earned their first singles wins of the season.  Krull downed Wardwell, 6-3, 6-2, at second singles.  And in the best match of the day, McKivergan outlasted Sam Russell-Davis, 7-5, 6-4, in the third flight matchup.

The Hornets will take on another VTSU rival on Sunday when they travel to Vermont State Castleton for a 1:00 pm non-conference match.
