Game Recap: Baseball |

Hornet baseball comes up short against Husson on the first day of NAC play

Bangor, ME - The Northern Vermont University-Lyndon baseball team opened up North Atlantic Conference play with a doubleheader at Husson University on Saturday afternoon.  Unfortunately for the Hornets, Husson came away with wins in both ends of the twin bill, coming away with a 4-3 walk-off win in game one and prevailing 8-3 in the nightcap.  Husson improved to 7-9 on the season, while Lyndon fell to 3-14

Game 1 - Husson 4, NVU-Lyndon 3

After Lyndon had tied the game in the top of the seventh inning, Husson's Tanner Evans lifted a walk-off home run over the left field fence to give the Eagles the win in the opener.

The Eagles got on the scoreboard first with a two-out rally in the bottom of the second inning.  After David York singled, Hunter Curtis doubled to left field and York came all the way around to score.  Brett Riffe followed with a base hit to make it 2-0, Eagles.

The Hornets got back even in the top of the third inning.  EJ Camden (Corona, CA) walked leading off.  Camden moved to second on a ground out and third on a wild pitch.  When TJ Santaw (Newport, VT) reached on an error, Camden scored Lyndon's first run.  Will Perkins (Holtwood, PA) followed with a base hit, and when Husson misplayed the ball, Santaw came all the way around to score and tie the game.

Husson regained the advantage in the hoe half of the fourth inning.  Curtis reached on an error, then advanced to second when Keegan Cyr drew a walk.  Akira Warren's two-out base hit scored Curtis to put the Eagles back in front.

With Husson still leading, 3-2, Lyndon was down to their last set of at bats in the top of the seventh inning.  Camden led off with a walk, putting the tying run on base.  Mark Osorio (Manchester, CT) sacrifice bunted Camden to second, then pinch hitter Oscar Paredes (Toa Baja, Puerto Rico) reached on an error to put runners at the corners.  When Santaw grounded out, Camden came across the plate to tie things.

After Hornet reliever Alberto Bustamante (Los Angeles, CA) retired the first batter in the bottom of the seventh inning, Evans delivered his game-winning shot.

Hornet starter Carlos Rodriguez (La Mirada, CA) and Eagle starter Matt Wallingford both delivered quality starts, although neither factored into the decision.  Rodriguez allowed three runs, two earned, and seven hits over six innings, while Wallingford allowed three unearned runs over six plus innings.  Ryan Robb came on with one runner on in the seventh inning and ultimately picked up the win for Husson.

Game 2 - Husson 8, NVU-Lyndon 3

Husson grabbed the early lead in the nightcap. After the Hornets went in order in the top of the first inning, Husson plated a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning.  Warren led off with a base hit. He later came in to score on Kobe Rogerson's base hit.  The Eagles tacked on an unearned run on a passed ball.

Husson made it 3-0 after manufacturing a run in the bottom of the second inning.  Curtis singled leading off, then Riffe sacrificed him to second.  Curtis moved to third on a Cyr base hit, then scored on a wild pitch.

The Hornets got on the scoreboard in the top of the third inning.  Santaw laced a two-out double down the left field line, then Perkins drove him in with a base hit back up the middle.

Lyndon got within a run in the top of the sixth inning.  Perkins led off with a base hit and moved to second on a wild pitch.  Matt Doherty (Gardner, MA singled to center to drive in Perkins and make it 3-2.

Husson opened up some breathing room in the home half of the seventh.  After Curtis led off with a single and Cyr was hit by a pitch, Warren doubled home Curtis and Cyr scored by virtue of an error on the play.  Warren later came home on a sacrifice fly from Jackson Curtis, giving Husson a 6-2 lead.

The Hornets looked to get back in the game in the top of the eighth inning.  Three straight base hits from Santaw, Perkins, and Dylan Wilson (Monroe, CT) loaded the bases with nobody out.  Santaw scored when Doherty grounded into a fielder's choice, cutting the Eagle lead to three.  However Husson was able to turn a double play to end the inning and the Hornet threat.  Curtis then hit a two-run home run in the bottom half of the inning to account for the final score.

Ryne Rametta went five innings for Husson to earn the win.  Hornet starter Ryan Alt (Poultney, VT) also went five and absorbed the loss.

The Hornets and Eagles will play two more NAC contests on Sunday afternoon at Husson.  First pitch is set for 1:00 pm.
