Game Recap: Softball |

Hornet softball swept by UMPI on opening day of NAC play

Hudson, NH - The University of Maine at Presque Isle rallied from a four-run deficit to defeat Northern Vermont University-Lyndon, 12-6, in the first North Atlantic Conference softball game of the season.  The Owls then limited the Hornets to one hit in the second game of the doubleheader and completed the sweep with a 10-0 victory.  UMPI improved to 7-12 on the season while Lyndon fell to 4-11.

Game 1 - UMaine-Presque Isle 12, NVU-Lyndon 6

After UMPI pushed across to runs in the top of the first inning, Lyndon quickly took the lead with four runs of their own in the bottom half of the frame.  Claudia Knapp's (Howell, NJ) RBI double and Saleena Porter's (St. Johnsbury, VT) two-run triple were the big blows for the Hornets.

The Hornets took advantage of a pair of Owl errors in the bottom of the second inning to put two more runs on the board and extend their advantage to 6-2.

UMPI turned the tables in the top of the third inning.  Zoe Stewart got things started with a two-run home run, cutting the Lyndon lead to 6-4.  The Owls then strung together five more hits including an Emily Blauvelt triple and three doubles.  The net result was four more runs and an 8-6 UMPI lead.

UMPI pitcher Gracelyn Walsh kept the Hornets off the scoreboard the rest of the way and the Owls extended their advantage with a run in the fifth inning and three unarned runs in the sixth.

Game 2 - UMaine-Presque Isle 10, NVU-Lyndon 0

UMPI pitcher Hailey Saylor was the story of game two.  Adrianna Lemieux's (St. Johnsbury, VT) third inning infield hit was the only Lyndon hit of the game as Saylor struck out six without walking a batter.

Meanwhile UMPI had eight hits and capitalized on five Lyndon errors.  Dalaney Anfinson had a double and two singles and drove in two runs.  Walsh had a pair of hits and three runs batted in.

The Hornets will take on Husson University in another NAC doubleheader on Saturday morning.  The games will again be played at Presentatin of Mary Academy in Hudson, NH.  First pitch is set for 10:00 am.
