Lyndonville, VT - The Northern Vermont University-Lyndon women's lacrosse team had their highest scoring game of the season on Saturday afternoon. Unfortunately for the Hornets, it wasn't nearly enough, as the University of Maine at Farmington came away with a 20-7 North Atlantic Conference victory. It was UMF's first win in 11 games this season, and their first in five conference outings. Lyndon remains winless in nine games overall, including four NAC outings.
The Hornets came out strong off of the opening draw. After Kiara Mack (Wisnooski, VT) won the draw, Katie Cushing (St. Johnsbury, VT) picked up a loose ball and fired it past Beaver goalie Kate Nowell to put Lyndon in front.
The lead was short lived, as UMF won the next draw and got the equalizer less than a minute later when Abby Trefsger scored an unassisted goal. The Beavers won the next draw and scored again when Ashlee Farrar found Ruby McMinis and McMinis fired a shot past Hornet goalie Rachel Palladino (Manlius, NY). The Beavers took control from there, scoring seven more times in the opening quarter to take a 9-1 lead.
UMF continued to control play as the second quarter began, and goals from Emma Bourget and Grace Erskine made it 11-1, Beavers, with just under 11 minutes to go before halftime.
Lyndon got the margin back to single digits when Isabel Bourgeois (St. Johnsbury, VT) scored off of an assist from Teagan Reeves (Stowe, VT). Bourgeois scored again at the 5:11 mark to cut the UMF lead to 11-3. When it looked like the Hornets would take that momentum into halftime, the Beavers found the goal twice in the final 32 seconds of the half, getting goals from Riley Forrest and Emma Brown to make the score 13-3 at the half.
The Beavers got back to back goals from Kaya Backman and Bourget to push their lead to 12, but Cushing responded with back to back goals for the Hornets to cut the gap back to ten. After an Erskine goal, Trefsger scored twice in succession to send UMF into the final period with a 13-goal advantage.
After a pair of Beaver goals, Cushing picked up her fourth goal of the game, then found Reeves for her first career goal to complete the scoring.
UMF outshot Lyndon, 43-11. Palladiono made 12 saves in goal for the Hornets, while Nowell stopped three shots.
The Hornets will close out the season on Sunday afternoon when they host Thomas College at 1:00 pm. It will be Senior Day, with Lyndon's senior players and student support staff getting recognized prior to the game.
