Lyndonville, VT - Fisher College rallied from a five run deficit to defeat Northern Vermont University-Lyndon in extra innings in the nightcap of Wednesday's baseball doubleheader. The Falcons had taken the opener and improved to 27-17 following the sweep. Lyndon fell to 8-21.
Game 1 - Fisher 9, NVU-Lyndon 5
Fisher jumped in front with two runs in the top of the first inning. After Emanuel Rosado singled and Ivanuel Hernandez walked, Jeremy Renta's RBI double gave Fisher the lead. Tim Catalano's RBI ground out made it 2-0, Falcons.
TJ Santaw (Newport, VT) tripled leading off the bottom of the first inning. After Dalton Berry (Tavares, FL) drew a walk, Santaw came in to score on a wild pitch. Berry then came home on Ryan Alt's (Poultney, VT) base hit to tie the game at 2-2.
Fisher loaded the bases in the top of the second inning, but Hornet starter Matt Brault (Milton, VT) was able to get out of the jam and keep the game tied. After Steven Friscia (Smithtown, NY) walked to lead off the bottom half of the inning, back to back doubles from Alberto Bustamante (Los Angeles, CA) and Tyler Murro (Littleton, NH) gave the Hornets a 4-2 lead.
Fisher regained the lead with four runs in the top of the fourth inning. Miguel Torres was hit by a pitch leading off and later scored on Rosado's RBI base hit. Renta's double drove in another, and Fisher went ahead, 5-4, when a run came home on a balk. Renta then scored on Catalano's sacrifice fly, giving the Falcons a 6-4 lead.
Lyndon got back to within one run when Murro tripled leading off the bottom of the fifth inning and later scored on Santaw's sacrifice fly.
Fisher opened up some breathing room with three runs in the top of the seventh inning. Yariel Salinas and Armando Torres started things with base hits. After Mighel Torres beat out a bunt to core a run, another scored on Coby Johnson's sacrifice fly and a third came home on Rosado's double. Lyndon was unable to break through in the bottom of the seventh, and Fisher had the win.
Joseph Ortiz, the second of five Fisher pitchers, picked up the win. Jacob Wechselblatt (Reston, VA) Lyndon's second of four pitchers, took the loss.
Game 2 - Fisher 9, NVU-Lyndon 7 (8 innings)
Lyndon took the early lead when Santaw singled leading off the home first inning and later scored when Matt Doherty (Gardner, MA) grounded into a fielder's choice.
The Hornets extended their lead in the bottom of the second inning. After bck to back base hits from Mark Osorio (Manchester, CT) and EJ Camden (Corona, CA), Brandon Fernansez (Sayreville, NJ) beat out a bunt, scoring Osorio. Santaw then beat out an infield hit, and a Fisher error on the play allowed Camden and Fernandez to come around and score, making it 4-0, Hornets.
Lyndon starter Mike Redmond (Plantation, FL) shut Fisher out through the first two innings. The Falcons were able to break through in the top of the third when Johnson beat out an infield hit with two outs. After a wild pitch, Johnson came in to score on a Hernandez base hit.
The Hornets capitalized on two Fisher errors to score two unearned runs in the home half of the third inning, extending the Lyndon lead to 6-1.
With the score still 6-1, Fisher staged a two-out rally in the top of the sixth inning. After the Falcons loaded the bases, Miguel Torres' base hit drove in two runs, cutting the Lyndon lead to three. Fisher loaded the bases again, and Hernandez cleared them with a double to left field, tying the score at 6-6. Renta's RB single then gave the Falcons a 7-6 lead.
Santaw tripled leading off the bottom of the sixth inning. After walks to Berry and Doherty, Dale Ostermann (Milford, DE) grounded into a fielder's choice, allowing Santaw to score the tying run.
After neither team scored in the seventh inning, the teams proceeded to extra innings following tiebreaker protocols where each inning starts with one out and a runner at second base. Fisher was able to capitalize on two Hornet errors to score two unearned runs in the top of the eighth inning, and Lyndon was unable to counter in the home eighth, giving the Falcons the win.
Angel Alicea picked up the win in relief for Fisher, while Sean Cavanaugh (Londonderry, NH) took the loss for Lyndon.
Proior to the doubleheader, Hornet seniors Matt Brault (Milton, VT), Friscia, and Santaw were recognized and honored for their contributions to the program. They were joined on the field by family and friends, and presented with gifts of appreciation.
Lyndon returns to action on Thursday when they host Thomas College in a North Atlantic Conference doubleheader. First pitch is set for 1:30 pm.
