Hornet softball comes up short against Bay Path

Longmeadow, MA - The Northern Vermont University-Lyndon softball team dropped both ends of its non-conference doubleheader at Bay Path University on Sunday afternoon.  Bay Path improved to 4-12 with the sweep, while Lyndon fell to 4-9.

Game 1 - Bay Path 3, NVU-Lyndon 2

Both Hornet starter Victoria Valentine (Burke, VT) and Wildcat starter Isabelle Ferrara hung zeros on the scoreboard through the first three innings.  Lyndon then drew first blood in the top of the fourth when Riann Fortin's (Derby, VT) RBI double scored Adriana Lemieux (St. Johnsbury, VT).

Bay Path took the lead with a three-run, two-out rally s in the home half of the fifth inning.  Madisyn Vera started things with a double.  Caroline Austin's double scored Vera to tie the game.  Taylor Suffoletto followed with a base hit, driving in Austin to give Bay Path the lead.  Then Suffoletto came around to score on Grace Ramsey's double to make it 3-1, Bay Path.

Lyndon got back within one run in the top of the sixth inning.  Valentine got aboard with a two-out base hit, stole second, and scored on a Siearra Anderson (Somersworth, NH) base hit.  Lyndon was able to get two runners on in the top of the seventh inning, but couldn't push across the tying run, allwoing the Wildcats to escape with the win.

Game 2 - Bay Path 11, NVU-Lyndon 3

The Hornets wasted no time jumping in front in the top of the first inning.  Amber Everett (Morrisville, VT) and Blake Southworth (Bethel, VT) started the game with back to back base hits.  After game two Bay Path starter Emma Scheeren retired the next two batters, Valentine's single scored Everett to put Lyndon in front.

Bay Path wasted no time taking control.  In the bottom of the first the Wildcats loaded the bases with two singles and a walk.  Scheeren, who had started things, then scored on a passed ball to tie the game.  After Suffoletto walked to again load the bases, Ramsey and Olivia Stebbins delivered back to back two-run doubles off of Lyndon starter Emily Anderson (Levittown, NY) to make it 5-1, Bay Path.  Stebbins later scored on Ferrara's sacrifice fly and the hosts led, 6-1, after one inning.

Bay Path extended their lead to 10-1 with four more runs on only two hits in the home fourth inning.

The Hornets tried to get back into the game in the top of the fifth inning.  After Claudia Knapp (Howell, NJ) drew a one-out walk, back to back base hits by Fortin and Valentine loaded the bases.  Saleena Porter's (St. Johnsbury, VT) base hit scored Knapp, then Fortin came home home when Hannah Corvino (Milford, NJ) hit into a fielder's choice.

The Wildcats would push across a run and end the game in the home fifth on consecutive two-out hits from Vera, Austin, and Suffoleto.

The Hornets will open North Atlantic Conference play next weekend when they host a pair of doubleheaders against the University of Maine at Presque Isle and Husson University.  The location and game times will be announced early next week.  Check LyndonHornets.com for the latest schedule updates.
