Hornet baseball completes their weekend sweep of UMaine-Farmington

Lyndonville, VT - Dylan Wilson (Monroe, CT) hit a pair of home runs, including a go-ahead grand slam, and Dale Ostermann (Milford, DE) picked up wins on the mound in both ends of today's North Atlantic Conference doubleheader as Northern Vermont University-Lyndon completed a four-game sweep of the University of Maine at Farmington.  Lyndon improved to 7-17 on the season and evened their NAC record at 4-4, while UMF fell to 3-22 overall and 0-8 in conference.

Game 1 - NVU-Lyndon 9, UMaine-Farmington 8

UMF jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the second inning.  Nate Coomb led off with a walk.  After Will Cauchon singled, Derek Gendreau laced a double, scoring Cooms and giving the Beavers the lead.  Jonny Pruett beat out an infield hit, with Cauchon scoring.  After Danny Terhune's sacrifice bunt, Hunter LaBossiere reached on an error, with Gendreau and Pruett both coming around to score unearned runs.

The Hornets got two runs back in the bottom of the third inning.  Dalton Berry (Tavares, FL) reached on an error leading off.  He stole second, then scored on TJ Santaw's (Newport, VT) double.  Wilson later drove Santaw in with a sacrifice fly.

Ostermann delivered a one-out single in the home half of the fifth inning.  Wilson followed with a two-run home run, tying the game at 4-4.

UMF loaded the bases with nobody out to start the top of the sixth inning.  Coombs then hit a ground ball base hit between third base and shortstop, with two runners coming around to score.  Later in teh inning Cauchon singled, scoring Jameson Bloch, extending the Beaver lead to 7-4.

Lyndon came right back in their half of the sixth inning.  With one out, Steven Friscia (Smithtown, NY) doubled down the left field line.  He scored on Berry's two-out base hit.  Santaw then reached on an error and Ostermann beat out an infield hit to load the bases.  Wilson then lifted a towering home run over the left field fence, giving the Hornets their first lead of the game at 9-7.

Gendreau drew UMF back within one run with a leadoff home run in the top of the seventh inning.  Ostermann responded by striking out the next two Beavers, then getting LaBossiere to pop out to end the game.

Ostermann picked up the win by pitching the final 1.2 innings.  Will Harriman went the distance for the Beavers and suffered the loss.

Game 2 - NVU-Lyndon 5, UMaine-Farmington 1

Ostermann came right back out to start the nightcap.  Gendreau's two-out RBI single in the top of the first inning gave the Beavers the early lead.

Friscia doubled leading off the bottom of the second inning.  He later scored to tie the game when Berry laid down a perfect squeeze bunt.

The Hornets took the lead n the next inning.  With two out, Oscar Paredes (Toa Baja, Puerto Rico) singled.  Friscia followed with his second double of the game, and Paredes came all the round to score.

Lyndon extended their lead in the fourth inning.  Berry led off with a base hit and stole second.  Santaw beat out an infield hit to put runners at the corners.  After Santaw stole second, Ostermann helped his own cause with a sacrifice fly that scored Berry.  Santaw then scored on Wilson's ground out, making it 4-1, Hornets.

Lyndon tacked on one insurance run when Santaw tripled leading off the bottom of the sixth inning.  He scored when Ostermann grounded into a fielder's choice and he beat the throw home.

Ostermann picked up his second win of the day after going five strong innings, allowing only the first inning run and scattering six hits while not walking a batter.  Sean Cavanaugh (Londonderry, NH) and Alberto Bustamante (Los Angeles, CA) each pitched a scoreless inning of relief.

Sunday's doubleheader, along with the NVU-Lyndon softball doubleheader against Rivier University, was part of lyndon's Student Athlete Advisory Committee Save Second Base event.  Save Second Base raised over $1,300 for breast cancer awareness, research, and care.  The proceeds will go directly to Wellness on Wheels in Burke, VT.

The Hornets will host Norwich University in a non-conference game on Tuesday afternoon at 3:00 pm.
