Castine, ME - Maine Maritime Academy raced out to a 9-0 lead after one quarter of Saturday's North Atlantic Conference women's lacrosse game and never looked back, defreating Northern Vermont University-Lyndon, 22-0. With the win, the Mariners improved to 8-2 on the season and reamin unbeaten in NAC play at 3-0. Lyndon remained winless in six starts overall. It was the Hornets' first conference outing.
Hazel Stoddard and Lily Cook had four goals apiece for the Mariners. Rebecca Coon added three scores while Olivia Hartman and Kirra Magaa each had two goals and three assists. Stoddard recorded eight ground balls and 11 draw controls while Magaa caused eight turnovers. Kiara Mack (Winooski, VT) led Lyndon with five ground balls, four caused turnovers, and seven draw controls.
Ella Bowes and Kelsey Melton combined for the shutout, each playing a half. Bowes made three saves and earned the win, while Melton made two stops. Lyndon goalie Rachel Palladino (Manlius, NY) went the distance and made 16 saves.
MMA outshot Lyndon, 51-8, and won 19 of 26 draws. The Hornets turned the ball over 40 times to 21 for the Mariners.
Lyndon returns to action on Sunday afternoon when they play at Husson University in another NAC contest. Game time is 12:00 noon.
