Stowe, VT - In a tough day for Northern Vermont University-Lyndon, the men's tennis team suffered a heavy defeat at the hands of Castleton University. Castleton won the match by a score of 8-1 at Topnotch Tennis Academy Wednesday.
In the doubles matches, Lyndon's Jeffrey Blais (Newport,VT) and David Gratton (Newport,VT) faced a tough challenge against Castleton's Phil Kluge and Miki Almirall in the first doubles match. Despite putting up a good fight, Blais and Gratton eventually lost the match 8-4. In the third doubles match, Matthew Condon (East Bridgewater,MA) and James Salvas (Morrisville,VT) also struggled against Stanley Anderson and Andy Phelan, losing the match 8-2. However, Lyndon managed to pick up a consolation point when Quinlan Peer (Saranac Lake,NY) and Garrick Webster (Terryville,CT) defeated Connor Davis and Jason Libscomb in a tiebreaker winning 8-7 (7-4).
Unfortunately, things did not get any better for Lyndon in the singles matches. Castleton swept all six matches. Matt Condon lost 6-1, 6-0 in the fifth singles match against Stanley Anderson, while Garrick Webster lost 6-1, 7-5 in the third singles match against Connor Davis. Quinlan Peer also fell to Phil Kluge in the second singles match, losing 6-1, 6-4.
In the first singles match, Jeffrey Blais fought hard against Miki Almirall, winning the second set to take the match to a tiebreaker. However, Blais eventually lost the tiebreaker 9-11, giving Castleton another point. David Gratton also put up a good fight in the fourth singles match against Jason Libscomb, but ultimately lost the match 6-4, 7-6.
With the match already decided, James Salvas played a pro set in the sixth singles match against Andy Phelan, losing 8-6.
With the loss the Hornets move to 2-5. Their next match will be played on April 7th against Thomas College.
