Rutland, VT - The Northern Vermont University-Lyndon's men's tennis team fell to 1-1 on the season, as they lost a non-conference match to Castleton University, 7-2, at the Vermont Sport and Fitness Center on Sunday afternoon.
In the first doubles match, Miki Almirall and Phil Kluge of Castleton started strong, defeating Lyndon's Jeffrey Blais (Newport,VT) and David Gratton (Newport,VT), 8-2. In the second doubles match, Hornet duo Quinlan Peer (Saranac Lake, NY) and Garrick Webster (Terryville,CT) lost to Castleton's Connor Davis and Stanley Anderson by the score of 8-5. In the third doubles match, Lyndon's James Salvas (Morristown,VT) and Matthew Condon (East Bridgewater,MA) lost to the Spartans' Dylan Miller and Andy Phelan, 8-2.
The singles matches were no less intense, with Salvas falling to Castleton's Rowan Kidder in sixth singles, 6-2 6-0. Lyndon's Peer fought back hard in the second singles match, defeating Kluge with a score of 6-3 6-1, earning Lyndon their first point.
Almirall of Castleton won a hard fought first singles match, defeating Blais in three sets with a score of 6-2 2-6 6-4, thus clinching the overall win for the Spartans. Despite the match already being decided, Davis continued to play strong and defeated Webster in third singles match, 6-3 6-7, winning in a tiebreaker, 10-5.
Lyndon rookie Gratton, however, was not to be deterred and fought hard in the fourth singles match against Castleton's Anderson, prevailing 6-4 5-7, 1-0 (10-6). Condon, unfortunately, was unable to secure a win for Lyndon, losing to Phelan in fifth singles, 6-0 6-2.
The Hornets will play at NCAA Division II St Michael's College on Wednesday. Doubles play will begin at 3:30 pm, with singles to follow.
