Hornet softball suffers two walk-off losses at Fastpitch Dreams Classic

North Myrtle Beach - The Northern Vermont University-Lyndon softball team suffered a pair of walk-off losses on Tuesday, day four of the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic.  This morning, the Hornets dropped a heartbreaker in the final inning, 4-3, against Albion College.  Then this afternoon the University of Mary Washington came from behind to down the Hornets, again by a 4-3 score.  Lyndon fell to 3-3 on the season.  Albion and Mary Washington each improved to 3-0.

Game 1 - Albion 4, NVU-Lyndon 3

Neither team was able to threaten through the first three innings, as Albion's Kearney Miller set the Hornets down in order each inning and and Lyndon's Hannah Corvino (Milford, NJ) only allowed a pair of singles.

The Hornets broke through first in the top of the fourth inning.  Amber Everett (Morrisville, VT) led off with a base hit to left field.  Blake Southworth (Bethel, VT) followed with another hit, moving Everett to third.  Southworth then stole second and Everett came home on the throw for the first run of the game.

The Bisons evened things in their half of the fourth.  Dylan Cardinale started things by drawing a one-out walk.  She moved to second on a ground out, then was lifted for pinch runner Hannah Petty.  Petty came in to score on Chloe Miller's base hit.

After Lyndon went down in order in the top of the fifth inning, Albion grabbed the lead in the bottom half of the frame.  Courtney Ellis led off with a double, then came all the way around to score on Lizzie Bissett's sacrifice bunt.  A pair of Hornet errors allowed Albion to plate another run and take a 3-1 lead.

That's how things stayed until the top of the seventh inning.  Claudia Knapp (Howell, NH) and Saleena Porter (St. Johnsbury, VT) opened the frame with back to back base hits, then Victoria Valentine (Burke, VT)  reached on a fielder's choice when Knapp was thrown out at third.  Down to their last out, Riann Fortin (Derby, VT) delivered a base hit back up the middle to score Porter and draw Lyndon to within one.  Adriana Lemieux (St. Johnsbury, VT) followed with another base hit, driving in Valentine to tie the game.

Ellis led off the Bison seventh with her second double of the game.  Bissett's single moved Ellis to third, then Jacqueline Jozefczyk lifted a sacrifice fly that scored Ellis and gave Albion the walk-off win.

Kearney Miller picked up the complete game victory for Albion while allowing six hits and striking out five without walking a batter.  Corvino took the loss, allowing seven hits and striking out six against one walk.

Game 2 - Mary Washington 4, NVU-Lyndon 3

Pitching was again the story of today's second game.  Mary Washington starter Samantha Stewart didn't allow a hit through the first five innings.  Seairra Anderson (Somersworth, NH) and Fortin each drew a walk, Lyndon's only baserunners through the first five.

Lyndon starter Emily Anderson (Levittown, NY) was nearly as good.  She only allowed one hit and one run over four innings before giving way to Corvino.  The Eagles scored their run in the home fourth when Erica Shoop walked and later scored on Emily Mousso's base hit.

Lyndon finally came alive in the top of the sixth inning.  Ann Watkins (Los Angeles, CA) walked leading off, then Everett singled, chasing Stewart.  Reliever Caitlyn Burch hit Audrey Tembreull (Vergennes, VT) to load the bases.  Claudia Knapp (Howell, NJ) singled to score Watkins and tie the game.  Blake Southworth (Bethel, VT) followed with a two-run single to give the Hornets a 3-1 lead.

Mary Washington got one run back in their half of the sixth inning.  Aminah Shakir led off with a triple, then scored on Hannah Steele's ground out.

Lyndon took the one-run lead into the bottom of the seventh inning.  Grace Drury got the Eagles started with a base hit.  Pinch hitter Bridget Laychak followed with a double, scoring Drury to tie the game.  Two batters later, Steele doubled to score Laychak and win the game for Mary Washington.

Burch took the win in releif for the Eagles, while Corvino suffered the loss.

The Hornets will conclude their Myrtle Beach swing on Tuesday morning with two more games.  At 9:00 am they will face Shawnee State University.  Then they will wrap up play with a rematch against Mary Washington at 11:00 am.
