Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Ice cold second half spells doom for Hornet men against UMaine-Presque Isle

Lyndonville, VT - The Northern Vermont University-Lyndon men's basketball team suffered through two prolonged scoring droughts in the second half of Friday's North Atlantic Conference men's basketball game against the University of Maine at Presque Isle.  The end result was a 94-74 victory for the visiting Owls, who improved to 11-12 on the season and 7-6 in NAC play.  Lyndon fell to 6-17 overall and 3-9 in conference.

Lyndon controlled play throughout most of the opening half.  The Hornets led by as many as 13 points on the strength of Peyton Olsen's (Middleburgh, NY) 18 first half points before settling for a 45-36 lead at intermission.

The second half was a different story.  Lyndon briefly pushed their advangage to 12 points, 50-38, just under a minute and a half into the period.  However, the Hornets went scoreless for over five minutes, and the resulting 19-0 UMPI run gave the Owls a seven-point lead at 57-50 with 13:20 to go in the game.

Lyndon steadied things, however, and went on an 11-0 run of their own, capped by Gregory Gonyea Jr.'s (Dolgeville, NY) second chance basket following a Calder Horowitz-McCadden (South Burlington, VT) offensive rebound.  With 9:52 remaining, the Hornets led 61-57.

A Charlie Mellick layup and a pair of free throws from Akhe McMichael tied things, but Olsen's layup off of an Owl turnover gave the Hornets what would prove to be their final lead at 63-61 with 9:05 to go.

Lyndon wouldn't score again until more than five minutes had elapsed, while UMPI ran off 18 unanswered points to take control of the game.  The Owls would cruise from there.

Griffin Guerrette and Dany Harris would lead the Owls with 24 points apiece.  Gilbert Jean Mendez and McMichael also scored in double figures with 14 and 10 points respectively.  KJ Minter added eight points and 11 rebounds for UMPI.

Olsen finished with 28 points to lead Lyndon.  Antonio Carlisle (St. Johnsbury, VT) and Mondwell Bukle (Pyeongtaek, South Korea) chipped in 11 and 10 points respectively.

Lyndon and UMPI will run it back at 3:00 pm on Saturday afternoon in Stannard Gymnasium.  The Hornets need a victory to secure a NAC playoff berth.
