Lyndonville, VT - After a tightly contested opening quarter, the Vermont State University Lyndon women's basketball team pulled away from visiting MCLA for a 67-45 season opening victory on Wednesday evening.
After Kerigan Disorda's (Benson, VT) layup gave Lyndon an early 11-2 lead, MCLA closed the quarter on a 10-3 run of their own to pull within 14-12 after one quarter. The Hornets seized control of the game with a 13-0 run to start the second quarter. Two three pointers from Kadienne Whitcomb (West Burke, VT) sandwiched a Sage Smith (Colebrook, NH) three to cap the run. The Hornets then kept the Trailblazers at bay and took a 36-20 lead into halftime.
The Hornets pushed their advantage to 20 midway through the third quarter, ending any thought of a Trailblazer rally. In the final quarter the Lyndon lead grew to as much as 29 following a Kiara Mack (Winooski, VT) free throw with 5:31 to go before the Hornets settled for the 22-point win.
Smith and Whitcomb shared scoring honors for Lyndon, each finishing with 15 points. Saleena Porter (St. Johnsbury, VT) had a solid game on both ends of the floor with a near double double of nine points and 14 rebounds, as well as six assists. Mack also finished with nine points.
Zaylee Ramos led MCLA with a game high 20 points. Kristie Zator was the only other Trailblazer in double figures, as she finished with 13 points.
Lyndon was 23/58 (39.7%) from the floor. The Hornets held MCLA to 17/60 (28.3%) shooting and forced 20 MCLA turnovers while committing 22 themselves. Lyndon also enjoyed a 44-33 rebounding advantage.
Lyndon will travel to Vermont State University Johnson this weekend for the annual Vermont State University Tip-Off Classic. The Hornets will face Fisher College in Saturday afternoon's second game at 2:00 pm. VTSU Johnson will face Vermont State University Randolph in the tournament opener at noon.
