Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Hornet women shut down VTSU Johnson to capture Classic Championship

Johnson, VT - For the second day in a row, the Vermont State University Lyndon women's basketball team came up with a dominating defensive performance at the Vermont State University Tip-Off Classic.  The result was a 52-33 victory over tournament host Vermont State University Johnson, earning the Hornets the Classic championship.  Lyndon remained unbeaten on the young season at 3-0 while Johnson fell to 1-2.

After Johnson's Alyssa Cervantes scored the first basket of the game, Lyndon responded with a 9-0 run which started and ended with baskets from Kiara Mack (Winooski, VT).  Meanwhile, the Lyndon defense, led by Mack's interior presence, shut down the Badgers until they scored the final four points of the quarter in the final minute to cut the Hornet lead to 9-6 after one period.

The Lyndon defense continued to give Johnson fits as the second quarter began.  The Hornets shut the Badgers out over the first five minutes of the quarter and outscored Johnson 11-6 in the frame to take a 20-12 lead into halftime.  Sage Smith (Colebrook, NH) and Kerigan Disorda (Benson, VT) were the offensive catalysts with five and four points in the quarter.

The Hornets broke the game open in the third quarter, outscoring Johnson 13-2 to start the period.  When Leilani Medina (Laredo, TX) converted a free throw, Lyndon had a 19-point advantage at 33-14 with 1:52 to go in the quarter.  Six quick Badger points cut the lead to 13, but Lyndon responded and Smith's layup just before the buzzer pushed the lead back to 16 entering the final quarter.

Johnson never threatened in the final quarter, as Lyndon's lead never got below 14 points.

Smith was Lyndon's leading scorer with 16 points, including four three-point goals.  She added eight rebounds.  Mack added nine points and eight rebounds and Saleena Porter (St. Johnsbury, VT) recorded team highs of 16 rebounds and four assists.

Gabrielle Wardwell paced Johnson with 13 points and 14 rebounds.

Smith was named the Classic Most Valuable Player, while Mack and Wardwell were named to the All-Tournament Team.

Lyndon will return to action on Tuesday evening when they travel to Middlebury College for a 6:00 pm non-conference contest.
