Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Hornet men can't slow down SUNY Canton

Lyndonville, VT - The Northern Vermont University-Lyndon men's basketball team posted its highest scoring output of the season in Friday night's North Atlantic Conference game against SUNY Canton.  Unfortunately for the Hornets, they weren't able to slow down the Kangaroos, and Canton came away with a 101-88 victory.  Canton improved to 4-11 on the season and 2-3 in NAC play, while Lyndon fell to 2-10 on the season and 0-2 in conference.

After Lyndon took an early 6-2 lead on layups from Antonio Carlisle (St. Johnsbury, VT) and Justin Phillip (Phoenix, AZ) and a pair of Carlisle free throws, Canton responded with an 11-0 run to grab a seven-point advantage.  The Hornets then went on a run of their own, and when Gregory Gonyea Jr. (Dolgeville, NY scored on a fast break layup at the 13:03 mark, Lyndon had regained the lead at 18-17.  That would turn out to be the last Lyndon advantage, as Canton's Quran DuBois converted a backdoor layup on the Roos' next possession to put Canton back in front.

With the game tied at 27-27 and 9:49 to go in the opening half, a quick seven-point Canton run gave the visitors some breathing room, and Lyndon would never get closer than five points the rest of the way.

Canton placed five players in double figures, led by Terrence Fields, who finished with a game high 25 points.  DuBois added 20 points and five assists and DeMerrill Levy came off the bench to score 18 points.  Juztin Chambers-Phillips and Brennan Harmer also hit double figures with 16 and 12 points respectively.  Eli Larson and Fadil Atcha-Dedji each pulled down 10 rebounds.

Gonyea scored a career high 19 points to lead Lyndon.  Peyton Olsen (Middleburgh, NY) finished with a double double of 16 points and 11 rebounds.  Carlisle and Mondwell Bukle (Pyeongtaek, South Korea) added 14 and 13 respectively.

Canton was 36/75 (48.0%) from the floor, 10/31 (32.3%) from behind the three-point arc, and 19/31 (61.3%) from the free throw line.  Lyndon was 33/74 (44.6%) from the field, 8/29 (27.6%) from distance, and 14/25 (56.0%) from the charity stripe.  The Roos outrebounded the Hornets, 46-42, and committed 13 turnovers to Lyndon's 18.

Lyndon returns to action on Tuesday evening when they travel to NAC East Division leading University of Maine at Farmington.  Tip-off is scheduled for 6:30 pm.
