Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

After a long layoff the Hornet women can't shake off rust against SUNY Canton

Lyndonville, VT - Playing for the first time in nearly four weeks, the Northern Vermont University-Lyndon women's basketball team suffered through a dreadful shooting night, resulting in a 63-31 defeat at the hands of the State University of New York at Canton on Friday evening.  With the victory in the North Atlantic Conference crossover contest the visiting Kangaroos evened their overall record at 7-7 on the season and moved to 3-2 in NAC play.  The Hornets saw their three-game winning streak snapped and fell to 4-6 on the season and 1-1 in conference.

After Lyndon grabbed a quick 5-0 lead following a layup from Sage Smith (Colebrook, NY) and a three-pointer from Kerigan Disorda (Benson, VT), Canton outscored the Hornets 24-4 over the rest of the first quarter to seize control of the game.  Lyndon was never able to get the margin back into single digits, as the Roos cruised to the victory.

Sophia Munoz posted a double double of 18 points and 14 rebounds to pace Canton.  Joie Culkin added 11 points and Samantha Dayter had a near triple-double with nine points, ten rebounds, and nine assists.  Smith, playing for the first time since the season opener in November, led Lyndon with 12 points.  Riann Fortin (Derby, VT) was the only other Hornet in double figures, as she finished with ten points and nine rebounds.

Neither team shot the ball well.  Canton only converted 28 of 76 shots (36.8%) and only 2 of 19 (10.5%) from behind the arc.  Lyndon struggled even more, going 9/59 (15.3%) from the floor and 2/24 (8.3%) from the three-point line.  The Roos held a 56-42 rebounding advantage and forced 22 Hornet turnovers while only committing 10 themselves.

The Hornets will return to action on Sunday at noon when they host Colby-Sawyer College in a non-conference matchup.
