Castine, ME - Northern Vermont University-Lyndon and Maine Maritime Academy both entered Friday evening's North Atlantic Conference women's basketball game unbeaten in NAC East Division play. The host Mariners jumped out to a 20-3 lead and never looked back, handing the Hornets their first division loss by a 76-40 score. With the win, MMA improved to 12-5 overall and remained unbeaten at 8-0 in NAC play. Lyndon fell to 9-9 on the season, 5-3 in conference, and 4-1 in division.
The Mariners extended their lead to 39-16 at halftime, and Lyndon never threatened. MMA's defense limited Lyndon to 14/60 (23.3%) from the floor, including only 3/14 (21.4%) from behind the three-point arc. Meanwhile MMA was 29/65 (44.6%) from the floor and 7/24 (29.2%) from distance. The Mariners also held a 50-28 advantage on the glass.
Maria Barela paced Maine Maritime with 14 points and nine rebounds. Grace Huntwork and Sydney Briscoe chipped in 12 points apiece while Erianna Moore dished out six assists. Sage Smith (Colebrook, NH) led Lyndon wiht eight points and eight rebounds.
The same two teams will square off in Castine again on Saturday afternoon. tip-off is scheduled for 1:00 pm.
