Plymouth, NH - Playing for the first time in 18 days, the Northern Vermotn University-Lyndon women's tennis team came up on the short end of a pair of matches at Plymouth State University this afternoon. The Panthers captured both of the non-conference matchups by identical 7-2 scores. Plymouth improved to 3-2 on the season, while Lyndon fell to 0-3.
Match #1 - Plymouth State 7, NVU-Lyndon 2
Lyndon's third doubles team of Lexi Foley (Newburyport, MA) and Emma Powers (St. Johnsbury, VT) garnered a point via forfeit, but Plymouth came away with wins at first and second doubles to take a 2-1 lead heading into singles play.
Powers was awarded a forfeit win at sixth singles to even the match at 2-2. However, Plymouth's Elena Cardoso picked up a win at fifth singles when Lyndon's Hailey Demers (Lyndon, VT) was forced to retire. The Panthers swept the other four flights to take the match.
Match #1 - Plymouth State 7, NVU-Lyndon 2
The day's second match followed a similar pattern. Powers and Demers picked up a point via forfeit at third singles, but Plymouth swept the other two doubles matches without losing a game.
In singles play, Demers received a forfeit win at sixth singles. Plymouth's Tessa LaBarre defeated Lyndon's Renee Chaples (Palmer, MA) 6-1, 6-1 at third singles, and the Panthers took the other four flights without dropping more than a game in any of the matches.
The Hornets will travel to Maine for several matches this weekend. On Saturday, they will open North Atlantic Conference play at Husson University, then play the Eagles in either one or two non-conference matches. Then on Sunday, they will face Thmas College, with a NAC match first, followed by a non-conference affair.
