Match Recap: Women's Tennis |

Delgado wins a thriller but Hornets fall to Castleton

Lyndonville, VT - Northern Vermont University-Lyndon women's tennis player Rebekah Delgado (Jersey City, NJ) came from behind to pick up her first career collegiate singles win in today's season opening matchup with Castleton University.  However, her victory turned out to be the lone bright spot for the Hornets, as Castleton came away with an 8-1 victory.

The Spartans took control of the match by sweeping the three doubles matches.  Castleton's first doubles team of Makayla Boisvert and Madelyn Nonni picked up the first point of the match with an 8-3 victory over Lyndon's Saleena Porter (St. Johnsbury, VT) and Renee Chaples (Palmer, MA).  Megan Brier and Stella Forte quickly followed with an 8-0 win over Delgado and Hailey Demers (Lyndon, VT) at second doubles.  Pearl Bellomo and Kayon Morgan then downed Emma Powers (St. Johnsbury, VT) and Abigail Stacy (Barre, VT), 8-1, at third doubles.

Castleton clinched the match after Boisvert defeated Porter at first singles and Nonni defeated Demers at fourth singles, both by 6-1, 6-2 scores.  After the Spartans added wins in sixth, third, and fifth singles, the second singles contest between Delgado and Brier was the only match to be completed.

Brier rallied from a 5-2 deficit to pull out the first set, 7-6, taking the tiebreaker 9-7.  With darkness approaching, the second set went right to a tiebreaker, where Delgado fought off a pair of match points for an 8-6 win to even the match.  With the deciding tiebreaker even at 4-4, Delgado pulled out three straight points to pick up the win.

The Hornets' next scheduled match is on Saturday, September 17th, when they will travel to Northern Vermont University-Johnson to open North Atlantic Conference play.
