Plymouth, NH - Northern Vermont University-Lyndon fell behind early and couldn't rally in Wednesday's non-conference baseball game at Plymouth State University. The host Panthers scored four times in the second inning on the way to a 7-2 victory. Plymouth improves to 8-14 on the season, while Lyndon falls to 4-15.
Peter Laviolette got Plymouth going with a 2-run bases loaded single off of Hornet starter Dylan Crump (Falls Village, CT) in the home half of the second inning. Tyler Wright followed with an RBI single, then Owen Baum's double drove in another to stake the Panthers to a 4-0 lead.
The Hornets got one run back in the top of the third inning when John Mahoney (Navarre, FL) reached on an error and later scored on Ryder Thornton's (Essex, VT) ground out.
Plymouth extended their lead with an unearned run in the fourth inning, Luke Sokolski's solo home run in the fifth, and Alex Rives' RBI single in the sixth.
The Hornets tried to get a two-out rally going in the top of th seventh inning when TJ Santaw (Newport, VT) drew a walk then stole second. Skyler Bushey (St. Albans, VT) followed with a base hit to score Santaw. That would prove to be the last run of the game, however, as both teams were unable to push any more runs across in the final two innings.
Baum, Sokolski, and Nick Healey all had two hit games for Plymouth. For Lyndon, Santaw was two for three and drew two walks. Tyler Murro (Littleton, NH) reached base safely three times, with a single, a double, and a walk.
Plymouth starting pitcher Max Lamora went five innings and allowed no earned runs and two hits while striking out eight to pick up the win. Four Panther relievers pitched an inning apiece to close out the game. Crump went two innings for the Hornets and absorbed the loss.
Lyndon will open North Atlantic Conference play this weekend when they host Husson University in a four-game series. Doubleheaders are scheduled for both Saturday and Sunday, with first pitch set for noon each day.
