Castine, ME - The Northern Vermont University-Lyndon men's lacrosse team traveled to Maine Maritime Academy on Tuesday afternoon for their final game of the 2022 season. The host Mariners jumped out to a big early lead, then cruised to a 21-1 victory in the North Atlantic Conference matchup. Maine Maritime improves to 7-6 on the season and 6-2 in NAC play. Lyndon closes at 1-10 overall and finished winless in seven conference starts.
The Mariners scored four times in the game's first 2:28, and ran out to a 12-0 advantage before Lyndon's Benjamin Cheever (Johnson, VT) scored a man-up goal off of an assist from Anthony Townsend (Pembroke, MA) at the 7:07 mark of the second quarter.
Jayden Wilson led the Mariner attack with six goals, four coming in the opening quarter. Alex Stevens added four goals and two assists. Zeke Tocci, Wilson Higgins, and Evan Golembeske each scored twice for Maine Maritime. Riley Morin recorded a game high eight ground balls, while Tocci, Brandon Gagne, and William Davee were credited with four caused turnovers apiece.
Townsend finished with six ground balls and Kelvyn Abreu (Winchester, MA) added five. Luke Violante (Ambler, PA) and Gilbert Flores (Winstead, CT) each caused a pair of turnovers.
Zach McCarthy started in goal for Maine Maritime and played the first 38 minutes to pick up the win. He was relieved by Andrew King, who was in turn relieved by Teddy Easley. The three Mariner goalies combined to make eight saves.
Aaron Florence (Lutz, FL) played the entire game in goal for the Hornets, recording 13 saves. Florence finishes his Lyndon career with 490 saves, second all-time at Lyndon to Marcus Bessette (Pembroke, NH), who recorded 566 saves from 2014 to 2018.
The Hornets will be graduating ten seniors, but expect to have nine underclassmen returnign to form the nucleus of the 2023 team.
