Utica, NY - The Northern Vermont University-Lyndon women's lacrosse team returned to action for the first time in 11 days on Wednesday afternoon. Unfortunately for the Hornets, SUNY Polytechnic Institute scored three times in the game's first four minutes and never looked back, cruising to n 18-4 victory over the Hornets in the North Atlantic Conference matchup. It was the Wildcats' first victory in ten games this season, including five NAC contests. The Hornets remain winless in seven outings, including three conference tilts.
Molly Burdick had a huge game for the Wildcats. She scored ten goals and added an assist, five ground balls, and three caused turnovers. Rachel Salmon added six goals and an assist, and recorded a game high 11 ground balls. Emma Draper and Madison Bastien scored the other Poly goals.
Freshman Katie Cushing (St. Johnsbury, VT) posted her first career hat trick with three second half goals. Freshman Isabel Bourgeois (St. Johnsbury, VT) scored the other Lyndon goal in the final minute of the first half. Rachel Palladino (Manlius, NY) had a team high four ground balls for the Hornets.
Poly goalie Alycia Lugo made 14 saves on 18 shots on goal and picked up the victory. Hornet goalie Paige Daley (Pleasant Valley, NY) stopped 10 of 28 Poly shots on goal.
Poly outshot Lyndon, 33-21, and had a 38-21 advantage in ground balls. The Wildcats had 15 draw controls to nine for the Hornets. Poly also converted seven of nine free position attempts, while the Hornets only made good on one of five.
The Hornets travel to Maine for a pair of NAC games this weekend. On Saturday, they will take on the University of Maine at Farmington in a 1:00 pm start. Then, on Sunday they will face Thomas College, also at 1:00 pm.
