Waterville, ME - Thomas College defeated Northern Vermont University-Lyndon, 23-2, in Saturday's North Atlantic Conference men's lacrosse opener for both teams. The Terriers even their overall record at 1-1, while the Hornets fall to 1-3 on the season.
Thomas got on the scoreboard less than two minutes into the game when Nathan Carter found Daniel MacWhinnie and MacWhinnie fired a shot past Lyndon goalie Aaron Florence (Lutz, FL). A minute later the Terriers' Max Lyons scored with an assist from Tomothy Worster. MacWhinnie made it 3-0 with a goal at the 10:58 mark of the quarter.
Benjamin Cheever (Johnson, VT) got Lyndon on the board with 9:37 to go in the opening quarter when he took a pass from Anthony Townsend (Pembroke, MA) and rifled a shot past Thomas goalie Patrick Buxton. A short time later William Heywood found Irons, who scored to give Thomas a 4-1 lead after one quarter.
The second quarter belonged to Thomas, as they notched four unanswered goals to extend their lead. MacWhinnie and Irons picked up a pair of man-up goals just 16 seconds apart, then Heywood added a goal at the 10:13 mark. Irons then scored off of an assist from Cameron Tower with 2:55 to go in the half to send Thomas into halftime with an 8-1 advantage.
The second half was all Thomas, as the Terriers notched 15 more goals while Lyndon only managed a fourth quarter man-down goal from Townsend.
Irons had a huge game to lead Thomas. He finished with seven goals and four assists. MacWhinnie added four goals and two assists, while Heywood and Worseter scored three goals apiece. Jakeb Weston recorded a goal and five assists and Carter had a game high nine ground balls. Townsend had six ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers for the Hornets.
Thomas outshot Lyndon, 73-34, and held a 49-17 advantage in ground balls. The Terriers also dominated at the X, winning 25 of 29 faceoffs. Buxton made 18 saves in goal for Thomas and earned the win. Florence had 25 saves for the Hornets.
The Hornets travel to SUNY Polytechnic Institute for another NAC matchup on Friday. The opening faceoff is scheduled for 3:00 pm.
