Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Mitchell breaks open a close game in the second half to down Hornet women

New London, CT - Mitchell College scored four straight goals in the final minutes of the third quarter to break open what was a one-goal game.  The Mariners went on to defeat Northern Vermont University-Lyndon, 10-2, in a non-conference women's college lacrosse game on Wednesday afternoon.  The host Mariners won for the first time in three starts this season, while the Hornets remain winless on the season.

Mitchell got on the scoreboard first at the 12:39 mark of the opening quarter, when Rachel Ricciuti fired a shot past Lyndon goalie Paige Daley and into the net.  The Mariners made it 2-0 with 4:46 to go in the quarter on an Abby Rasmussen goal.

The Hornets got on the scoreboard in the first minute of the second quarter.  Lyndon's Alyssa Fryman (Lancaster, NH) forced a Mariner turnover in front of the Hornet goal, then raced the length of the field and put a shot by Mitchell goalie Gaby Estupinan.  That was the only scoring in the quarter, as Mitchell headed into intermission with a 2-1 lead.

Mitchell's Jessica Krupnikoff put the Mariners back up by two goals when she scored a minute into the third quarter.  Lyndon answerd less than two minutes later when Fryman took a clearing pass at midfield and made another long run to the goal and found the back of the net for a man-up goal.  Mitchel then took control of the game with four goals over the final 8:42 of the quarter, two each from Krupkikoff and Ricciuti.  The Mariners took a 7-2 lead into the final quarter.

In the final quarter the Mariners added insurance goals from Kathryn Barillaro, Lindsey Robinson, and Alex Novakowski to account for the final margin.

Mitchell outshot Lyndon, 28-7, and held a 37-24 advantage in ground balls.  The Hornets turned the ball over 43 times to 34 for the Mariners.  Mitchell also won 10 of 15 draws.

Estupinan picked up the win in goal despite not having to make a save.  Daley made 11 saves for the Hornets.  Barillaro had a game high eight ground balls for Mitchell, while Fryman and Nyah Garner (Birmingham, AL) had five ground balls apiece for the Hornets.

The Hornets are scheduled to host Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts on Sunday afternoon.  The location and game time are still to be determined.
