Winter Haven, FL - Mount Vernon Nazarene University scored eight runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to break open a 1-1 tie with Northern Vermont University-Lyndon. The Cougars, members of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, went on to defeat the Hornets, 12-2, in Lyndon's season opener. The game was the Hornets' first of nine in the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational. MVNU picked up their first win in three outings.
Casey Kalman put MVNU on the board early in the bottom of the first inning with a sacrifice fly to score Toby Walker, who had led off the game with a double. The Hornets tied things at 1-1 in the top of the fourth. TJ Santaw (Newport, VT) led off the inning with a single and later stole second. EJ Camden (Corona, CA) delivered a two-out base hit to score Santaw.
MVNU broke the game open with eight runs in the bottom of the inning. Brady Wallace got the scoring going with a double that scored Cooper Crawford. Walker followed with a single, scoring Wallace from second to make it 3-1. Walker later scored on an RBI groundout from Kalman. Two more runs followed shortly after on a Cameron Miller single that pushed across Andrew Miller and Jake Glover. Clay Cottle then singled, scoring Devin Pearl from second. MVNU tacked on two more runs to extend its lead to 9-1 when the inning ended.
The Hornets were able to get one run back in the top of the fifth inning. Tyler Roberge (Essex, VT) reached on an error leading off, and came all the way around to third.
With a 9-1 lead after four, MVNU added on three more insurance runs in the ballgame to secure the 12-2 victory. Two batters later, Ryder Thornton (Essex, VT) lofted a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Roberge for the second Hornet run. That would be as close as Lyndon would get, however, as the Cougars tacked on three more insurance runs to account for the final score.
Glover went six innings to earn the win on the mound for the Cougars. He allowed four hits, two runs (one earned), and struck out four. Matt Page (Groton, VT) started and took the loss for the Hornets.
Walker, Miller, and Crawford had two hits apiece to pace MVNU. Crawford drove in three runs, while Kalman and Cottle drove in two runs each. Camden had two hits for the Hornets, with Santaw and Skyler Bushey (St. Albans, VT) garnering the other Lyndon hits.
The Hornets will return to the diamond on Friday for a pair of games. Lyndon will play Bates College at 11:00 am, then follow with a 2:30 game against Grove City College. Both games will be played on Field #3 at NorthEast Regional Park in Davenport, FL.
