Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Hornet women shake off sluggish start to topple Fisher

Lyndonville, VT - The Northern Vermont University-Lyndon women's basketball team took a while to gt going on Saturday, but once they did they pulled away from Fisher College, cruising to a 55-29 non-conference victory on Saturday afternoon.  The Hornets improved to 3-5 on the season, while the Falcons fell to 1-9.

Lyndon's Riann Fortin (Derby, VT) scored on the game's first possession, but the Hornets would find a lid on the basket for the next six minutes, as a pair of Madison Kelley jumpers staked Fisher to a 4-2 lead almost six minutes into the game.  From then it would be the Falcons who couldn't find the mark, however, as back to back Fortin baskets gave Lyndon back the lead, then Christina McKivergan's (Essex, VT) three-pointer extended the Hornet advantage to 9-4 after one quarter.

Lyndon continued to extend the advantage, scoring the first six points of the second quarter, before Fisher's Naomi Mares knocked down a jumper in the lane to end a nearly 13-minute scoreless streak.  Lyndon continued to pull away, though, outscoring the Falcons, 19-4, in the period.  A Gabriella Cordova (El Paso, TX) three-pointer sent the Hornets into halftime with a 28-8 lead.

Kelley scored the first six points of the third quarter to pull Fisher back within 14 points.  That would be as close as Fisher would get, as a quick seven-point Lyndon run capped by a Cordova jumper would push the lead back up to 21, and the Falcons wouldn't threaten the rest of the way.

McKivergan led Lyndon with a career high 13 points, connecting on four three-point goals.Fortin chipped in eight points and six rebounds and Saleena Porter (St. Johnsbury, VT) pulled down a game high 11 rebounds.  Kelley paced Fisher with a game high 14 points and matched Porter for rebounding honors with 11.

Both teams struggled to shoot the ball, as Lyndon only converted 20 fo 59 shots (33.9%), while Fisher only made 12 of 54 (22.2%).  The Hornets held a 45-37 rebounding advantage and forced 28 Fisher turnovers while committing 26 themselves.

The Hornets will have a quick turnaround, as they host Lesley University in another non-conference tilt Sunday at 12:00 noon.
