Johnson, VT - The Northern Vermont University-Lyndon men's basketball team rallied from a 10-point second half deficit and came back to defeat Vermont Technical College, 79-71, to win the consolation game of the Northern Vermont University Tip-Off Classic, held this year at Northern Vermont University-Johnson. The Hornets improved to 2-1 on the season while the Knights fell to 1-4.
After the Hornets led for most of the first half, Vermont Tech closed the half on a 12-3 run to take a 40-33 lead into halftime. The Knights maintained their advantage in the early stages of the second half, and when Terrel Stelle converted a free throw at the 16:25 mark, Vermont Tech had its biggest lead at 46-36.
The Hornets responded with a quick 13-2 run, capped by a Jayden Macknail (Camillus, NY) three-pointer which gave Lyndon its first lead of the second half at 49-48. Vermont Tech answered with a run of their own, quickly regained the lead, and pushed their advantage back to seven, 61-54, following a Luc Levesque free throw with 10:14 remaining.
Antonio Carlisle (St. Johnsbury, VT) then capped a Lyndon run with a three-pointer to put the Hornets back up by one, 64-63, with 3:21 to go. Ben Mullet and Brett Roy (Newport, VT) traded three-pointers, then a Mullet layup made it 68-67, Kinghts. Carlisle then knocked down a pair of free throws to put the Hornets back up one. On the next possession, Jaden Phillips (Temps, AZ) came up with a big steal, then a Mondwell Bukle (Pyeongtaek, South Korea) jumper extended the Lyndon advantage to three. The Hornets were able to hold off the Knights from there to come away with the win.
Carlisle had a high efficiency performance to pace Lyndon. The senior co=captain finished with a game high 28 points, shooting 8/13 overall and 5/7 from behind the arc. Macknail added 12 points while Tyrese Harris (Fort Benning, GA) and Roy tallied 11 points apiece. Harris dished out seven assists and Phillips pulled down a game high nine rebounds.
Jaylon Calvin led Vermont Tech with 18 points and eight rebounds. Stelle added 15 points and five assists for the Knights, while Cody Maxwell added 14 points.
Bukle and Calvin were both named to the All-Tournament Team.
Lyndon returns home on Thursday evening to face Plymouth State University. Game time in Stannard Gymnasium is set for 6:00 pm.
