Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Hornet men's soccer unable to hold off Plymouth State in season finale

Lyndonville, VT - The Northern Vermont University-Lyndon men's soccer team hosted Plymouth State University in their final contest of the season on Tuesday afternoon.  The Hornets took an early lead, but the Panthers rallied for a 3-1 non-conference victory.  Lyndon wrapped up their season with a record of 2-12-1, while Plymouth improved to 6-7-3.

The Hornets got on the scoreboard in the sixth minute when Jacob Baesemann (St, Johnsbury, VT) made a run up the left side, then delivered a cross to Joseph Patrick Osborn (Hanover, NH), who fired a shot past Plymouth goalkeeper Brayden White.

The Panthers tied things up in the 22nd minute.  Lyndon goalkeeper Brett Roy (Newport, VT) stopped a shot from Adam Stelljes right in front of the goal, but the rebound came right back to Stelljes, who poked it past Roy.  That's where things stayed heading into halftime.

Plymouth took the lead in the 54th minuet when Stelljes received a touch through ball from will Haney for a breakaway, then put a shot past Roy.  The Panthers added an insurance goal in the 79th minute after Lyndon was called for a hand ball in the box.  Roy saved Faisal Abdallah's penalty kick, but the ball deflected off the goal post and right back to Abdallah, who deposited it into the net to account for the final score.

Plymouth had control much of the game, as the Panthers outsshot the Hornets, 39-9, and earned 17 corner kicks to only one for Lyndon.  Roy made a season high 16 saves in goal for Lyndon, while White made four stops for Plymouth.

The Hornets now turn their attention to next season, when as many as 15 players could return.  Lyndon hopes to combine that experience with a strong incoming recruiting class to become a factor in the North Atlantic Conference.
