Box Score Lyndonville, VT - Maine Maritime Academy jumped out to a 12-0 lead at the start of Friday's North Atlantic Conference women's basketball game at Northern Vermont University-Lyndon and never looked back. The NAC East Division leading Mariners cruised to an 89-39 victory over the Hornets to improve to 15-2 on the season and 9-0 in NAC play. The Hornets fell to 6-5 on the season and 1-3 in conference.
Maria Barela topped five double figure scorers for the Mariners, posting a double double with 18 points and 12 rebounds. Erianna Moore added 17 points while Lauren Plissey pulled down a game high 14 rebounds. The Hornets didn't have anyone reach double figures, as Ariez Pimental (San Leandro, CA) came off the bench to score a team high eight points.
The Hornets were unable to get anything going on offense all night. They converted only 12 of 67 shots (17.9%) including only 2 of 23 (8.7%) from behind the three-point arc. Meanwhile the Mariners were 34 for 68 (50.0%), including 10 of 26 (38.5%) from distance. Maine Maritime also held a commanding 65-29 rebounding advantage. The Hornets were able to force 22 Mariner turnovers while committing only 13 themselves.
The same two teams will square off again on Saturday afternoon. Tip-off in Stannard Gymnasium is set for 3:00 pm.
